<p>What’s a sure sign that it’s finally Spring? Retiring your thermals, yes. Hayfever sufferers looking like a rabbit with myxomatosis, definitely. But more excitingly, it’s the arrival of bluebell season. We’re so lucky to have the most incredible number of bluebell walks in Berkshire. </p>

<p>Pop into the visitor centre at <a href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/basildon-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Basildon Park</a>&nbsp;and ask them to point out the best places to spot bluebells around the grounds. There are a number of walks you can enjoy of varying lengths. So if you have little Mudders, the National Trust staff will suggest the best routes to take.</p>

Both excellent. For something lighter and more brunchy, try the <a href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/review-artichoke-cafe-pangbourne-best-brunch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Artichoke Café</a> in Pangbourne.</p>

<p>Home to 15 species of butterfly and six types of wild orchids, this sliver of beech woodland and chalk grassland is a wildlife mecca. Head there in Spring to see bluebells adorn the woodland floor, as well as wild marjoram, cowslip, and wild candytuft.</p>



<p><strong>Pit stop:</strong> You can&#8217;t go to Hurley without dropping by <a href="https://hurleyhouse.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hurley House Hotel</a>. Choose from pizzas, pastas, or their highly acclaimed Japanese options in the restaurant. Afternoon tea also hits different.</p>

<p>Any wood that is said to have been the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame&#8217;s Wildwood in <em>Wind In the Willows</em>, has got to be worth a visit. Particularly when it&#8217;s rolling out the blue carpet. <p>The formal gardens at this National Trust gem on the Bucks/Berks border are a sight to behold in all seasons, but you’ll need to venture into the ancient woodlands surrounding them to get the best views of the bluebells in April. There&#8217;s a circular 3km trail running until mid-May, which takes in five spring flowers growing across the estate. Pick up a free trail sheet from the information centre located in the walled garden car park. </p>

<p>Every year <a href="https://www.rushallfarm.org.uk/news/meiuma0tui1ddmro2nbp0rh5ej4hwt" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rushell Farm</a> opens up its woodland for beautiful bluebell walks in aid of Reading MS Society. The spring strolls start from the impressive Rushall Manor and take you on a variety of walks on &#8216;permitted paths&#8217; that vary in length from a dedicated 5 miles down to a short, ‘wheelchair friendly’ circuit. This year, the dates are: Sat 22 and Sun 23 Apr &amp; Sat 29 and Sun 30 Apr<br>(11am-5pm).</p>



<p><strong>Pit stop: </strong>You&#8217;re minutes from <a href="https://oldbootinnstanforddingley.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Old Boot</a> in Stanford Dingley – top nosh and a cosy vibe with a big garden. Boot the kids outside to the playground, stat.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/parks-and-countryside/parks-visit/popes-meadow" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pope’s Meadow</a>, named after Binfield’s most famous resident – the 18th century poet and philosopher Alexander Pope,&nbsp;is a Green Flag Award winning site. Walk through the meadow and find blooms of blue between Pig Little Field and Murrell Hill Lane in Binfield. You never know, it might even inspire you to write poetry too.</p>



<p><strong>Pitstop:</strong> <a href="https://www.thefoundrybell-wokingham.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Foundry Bell</a> is just 1.2 miles away in Wokingham.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.bbowt.org.uk/reserves/Moor-Copse" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Moor Copse</a>&nbsp;in Tidmarsh (between Theale and&nbsp;Pangbourne) is an area of&nbsp;tranquil woodland surrounded by a patchwork of meadows and pastures set in the heart of the Pang Valley. Take a stroll and see&nbsp;the bluebells, early purple orchids, and cowslips at their very best. The paths&nbsp;can get a bit muddy in places, so sandals and heels are probably not&nbsp;a good idea.</p>



<p><strong>Pit stop:</strong> Make a dash to&nbsp;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://www.swanpangbourne.co.uk" target="_blank">The Swan in Pangbourne</a>, a riverside pub, just two miles away.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://www.bbowt.org.uk/reserves/warburg-nature-reserve" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Warburg Nature Reserve</a> in Henley is a lovely place to enjoy a walk and see bluebells, other wild&nbsp;flowers and all the signs of spring.  </p>

<p><a href="http://www.bbowt.org.uk/reserves/bowdown-woods" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bowdown Woods</a> just south of Newbury is a magical ancient wood that stretches from the vast heathland at Greenham Common down to the River Kennet and is full of hidden valleys, sunny glades, and patches of heathland with bluebells at every turn. The&nbsp;Wildlife Walk takes in some damp clay areas on the lower slopes and steep climbs up to higher, drier ground.</p>



<p><strong>Pit stop:</strong> You&#8217;re spoilt for choice: excellent wine and tapas at <a href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/restaurants/review-goat-on-the-roof-newbury-berkshire/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goat on the Roof</a> or head a smidge out of town to <a href="https://theboxford.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Boxford</a> for casual family dining.</p>

<p>Not only a magically pretty National Trust building and gardens well worth a visit in its own right, but the Greys Court Spinney Woods are a sea of English bluebells. It’s an extraordinarily beautiful site. The walk itself is either a toddler friendly 750 metres or a more stretchy 2-3k depending on how you’re feeling.</p>



<p><strong>Pit stop:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hartstreettavern.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hart Street Tavern</a> is a brilliant (and popular) all-day foodie spot. Just 9 mins by car too.</p>

You’ll see magnolias, rhododendrons, and azaleas.</p>



<p><strong>Pit stop:</strong> Try the award-winning <a href="http://www.thefoxandhoundsrestaurant.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Fox and Hounds</a> in Englefield Green (technically Surrey but only 2.5 miles from Savill Garden) or <a href="https://www.exclusive.co.uk/royal-berkshire/food/fork/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Fork Restaurant</a> at Royal Berkshire (a 15-minute drive)</p>

<p>This 130 acre park, including a playground and café, has a lovely bluebell trail through the woods. And, if you’re lucky, you might see deer and other wildlife too.</p>



<p><strong>Pit stop:</strong> <a href="https://www.thebeehivewhitewaltham.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Beehive</a> in White Waltham is 2.7 miles and ridiculously good. If not, make a break to Bray for a foodie gastro pub that has all the traditional vibes: <a href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/pubs-inns/the-crown-at-bray-review/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Crown at Bray</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Also worth visiting:</strong> <strong>Chazey Wood</strong>, within the Mapledurham estate.&nbsp;<strong>Highwood</strong>, Woodley with its&nbsp;mixture of lowland woodland and heathland which used to be part of the grounds of Woodley Lodge. <strong>The Coombe</strong>, Streatley, has&nbsp;an abundance of bluebells in the spring. <strong>Cayfield Copse</strong>, Caversham has a lovely woodland walk suitable for buggies and wheelchairs. <strong>Dinton Pastures Country Park</strong> in Wokingham and <strong>Lily Hill Park</strong> in Bracknell deliver an abundance of blue.</p>
