Can't be bothered with the faff of Pancake Day? Drop the spatula and make a reservation at one of these eateries instead.
If you can’t think of anything worse than flour, eggs and globs of Nutella plastered all over the kitchen (including the ceiling, if the flipping goes particularly badly), then save yourself the hassle and go out this Pancake Day. Trust us, the kids will enjoy it just as much.
Sel et Sucre, Windsor
For dreamy Insta interiors and a glass of bubbles alongside your crepe, head over to this French-inspired bistro in Windsor tout suite. They have a huge range of savoury and sweet dishes including Cotton Candy Dream crepes if you’re brave enough to handle the sugar rush or buckwheat galettes (savoury pancakes to you and me) made the Brittany way. Oh, and rumour has it, Shakespeare wrote The Merry Wives of Windsor here.
The Wellington Farm Shop, Hook
A surefire Muddy hit, Wellington Farmshop & Café is a rural gem offering simple and delicious food using quality local ingredients. This family-friendly cafe is an unpretentious affair (despite being owned by a grand old duke). Uplevel your Shreddies on Shrove Tuesday for the buckwheat pancakes with passionfruit and blueberries. You won’t regret it.
Bluegrass BBQ, Reading and Wokingham
If you love your pancakes with more yeeha than ooh-la-la, get your stacks puffed up like a pillow at Bluegrass BBQ in Reading. There’s all the crowd-pleasing sweet and savoury combos you would expect, and some that may challenge even the most adventurous palette, like the Low and Joe – three-stack pancakes with pulled pork, bacon, vanilla ice cream, warm maple syrup and a shot of espresso for pouring. Yikes.
Bill’s, Newbury, Bracknell, Reading and Windsor
Holy crepe! Bill’s are pushing Pancake Day into a 10-day flipping fiesta with a special pancake menu available from 21 Feb – 1 Mar. Oh, and let’s not forget they do a pretty foxy line in cocktails too. At lunch, grab a Bloody Mary and go savoury with Poached Eggs, Feta and Avocado with sweetcorn pancakes. Or hit the sugar hard with caramelised Banana and Salted Caramel Ice Cream or Frozen Berries and White Chocolate Sauce pancakes for dessert!
Coffee Barker, The Lexicon, Bracknell
Pancakes and the chance to hit the Charlotte Tilbury and Mac counters at Fenwicks Bracknell. Right next door is the rather stylish Coffee Barker. It’s a great spot to supercharge your batteries for shopping and indulge in a triple stack of puffed up American pancakes served with half of your five a day and a bouquet of edible flowers.
Coppa Club, Maidenhead, Sonning and Streatley
Rack and stack your pancakes at Coppa Club. We love that it is child-friendly without feeling like you’re on the set of CBeebies and the menu is an extensive list of crowd-pleasers. They haven’t gon crazy with their stacks and toppings so expect to see bacon and maple syrup and blueberries. Devour and then resist the urge to steal the plate.
Muddy favourite Fego is always a great lunching and brunching option, and their pancake offerings are a slightly more upmarket choice for this Shrove Tuesday. Go classic with a fluffy pancake stack with fresh blueberries or bacon, or all-out with their pancake plate – which is essentially a full fried breakfast sandwiched between pancakes and covered in syrup. If you can’t get to their Sunningdale branch, shoot over to Ascot or Marlow instead.
