Picture this: a luxury barn (yes, that’s a thing) nestled in the manicured wilds of Ascot where well-heeled locals flock to get a taste of the good life. <a href="https://www.dorchestercollection.com/ascot/coworth-park/dining/the-barn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Barn</a> is located within the sprawling grounds of five-star Coworth Park and comes under the remit of Michelin-starred chef, Adam Smith, which unlike sister restaurant Woven (tucked away in the main hotel), is a more rustic dining experience that still retains that trademark level of sophistication you&#8217;d expect from a Dorchester Collection pad.

The menu? It’s casual… if your version of casual involves chateaubriand, cucumber gazpacho, and a sommelier who knows their stuff. It&#8217;s flexible dining in the sense you could go for the whole civilised three course hog or enjoy a more pub grub type offering from the Barn Classics. Smithy’s Chicken Pie and the BBQ Glazed Beef Short Rib are stuff of legend. 



Kids are welcomed with open arms, offered a dedicated menu that will appeal to both the fussy and more adventurous types. In short? The Barn is the kind of the place you go drink rosé and look effortlessly fabulous while doing it.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

Arriving is a little like walking into Narnia. Clip clop your way over the fairytale bridge, and you&#8217;ll find the restaurant tucked away from the sprawl of the main Mansion House with its own separate car park. No need to be a staying guest. While there&#8217;s an inside area, the party takes place primarily outside in what can be best described as a posh teepee. This is Ascot’s idea of a barn — meaning it’s technically rustic but suspiciously polished, so expect an Insta-candy combination of sleek hanging lights, potted plants, and exposed brick. 



Nothing stuffy about this place though. It has a totally laid-back vibe and an unmistakable air of sophistication. The canopy has 360-degree window panels, totally open for al fresco scoffing in the summer (it&#8217;s an absolute suntrap), but zipped up to create a cosy nook with trendy heaters and blankets in the winter. The outlook sees a pano of rolling country hills, a babbling brook, and those old-fashioned vintage lamp posts lighting the way. Like I said, literally Narnia. 



The Barn hits the blend of casual and occasion perfectly. On the Saturday night I visited, it attracted a totally mixed crowd for a variety of occasions, from date nights to families, groups of friends, and even an intimate wedding meal. The dress code is relaxed, so you&#8217;ll find some going all out with collared shirts and sky-high stilettos, and others in jeans and sun dresses. Your stay, your way. Doing what makes you comfortable is what&#8217;s encouraged here.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>

Chin, chin! Little time was wasted getting the Champagne flowing &#8211; starting with a glass of Veuve while we perused the menu in the sun. It&#8217;s a tough choice. There&#8217;s loaaads to tickle your fancy, from Burrata to Grilled Octopus. In the end, I went for a new dish on the menu &#8211; the Goats’ Cheese Beignets. It absolutely blew me away. The flavour of the goats&#8217; cheese was insane, and the accompanying red pepper ketchup, basil and black olive paired perfectly. Summer on a plate.

Meanwhile, my foodie partner in crime opted for The Barn Fish Cake with curry mayonnaise and pickled radish which was packed with flavour. A generous portion too. There&#8217;s just something about stuffing your face in the great outdoors that hits a little different, and the whole setting here really does elevate the plates.



Time for another tipple, me thinks. The cocktail menu is pretty cracking, but if you&#8217;re feeling particularly adventurous, the bartender is all too happy to whip up a personalised cocktail just for you. I grabbed the Autumn Breeze (Sapling Gin, Kwai Feh Lychee Liqueur, Cranberry Juice, Elderflower Cordial, and Mint) and was obsessed. Meanwhile, a glass of Whispering Angel rosé made its way to the other side of the table. You certainly won&#8217;t run the bar dry here.

It would have practically been a sin not to partake in the Waterford Farm Chateaubriand &#8211; big enough for two to share. Sucker for a surf and turf? Grab the Marinated Whole Prawns on the side. The beef was cooked beautifully and the flavour, unsurprisingly, was stunning. I wanted to bathe in the Garden Herb Chimichurri sauce, and we got the Peppercorn too. I also loved the sprinkle of crispy onions and shredded bits of beef on top. 



My only comments would be a few more accompaniments like tomatoes and mushrooms wouldn&#8217;t have gone amiss. The triple cooked chips were tasty, but a little more seasoning would have also taken them to stratospheric heights. 



Totally unexpected though, was just how witty and fun the staff were. Not always the case when it comes to five-star dining. From the get-go, you are warmly greeted with open arms, and the waiting team are not afraid to throw around a bit of banter which I love. Service is genuinely exceptional, personable, professional, and really made the night special.

Warning: the puddings will leave you begging for mercy. At £18 a pop, these are definitely worth going at sharer-style. My proudest moment had to be the waitress jokingly saying she&#8217;d never seen someone finish the banana split solo. Well, this is me we&#8217;re talking about. Challenge accepted. My stomach was impressed; my trousers were terrified. Totally worth it though &#8211; it was delicious, comprised of signature chocolate crème, banana caramel and soft serve ice cream.



We also grabbed the Signature Chocolate with brownie, salted caramel and tonka bean. Can confirm I went to sweet treat heaven and back. Definitely ask for a scoop of ice cream to go with this choco monster. Fine, by now I was well and truly waving the white flag. To sum up: it’s not a real barn. There’s no hay, no chickens, and the only thing mooing is the chateaubriand. But The Barn at Coworth Park is charmingly casual, surprisingly cosy, and 100% the place to go if you want to pretend you&#8217;re starring in a rom-com where the countryside fixes all your problems.

You&#8217;re already kicking about your own luxury playground, so why not hang around for the day (weekend, week)? <a href="https://www.dorchestercollection.com/ascot/coworth-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coworth Park</a> have a glorious 240 acres to stomp around, with its own equestrian centre for scenic rides and polo (a match was being played the Saturday I visited). 



My pick would be the gorgeous spa with a stunning indoor pool, state-of-the-art gym, snow showers, and treatment rooms. If the kids are tagging along, there&#8217;s always a cracking seasonal programme and sculpture trail. But further afield, <a href="https://www.rct.uk/visit/windsor-castle" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Windsor Castle</a>, <a href="https://www.ascot.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ascot Racecourse</a>, <a href="https://www.legoland.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LEGOLAND Windsor</a>, and <a href="https://www.windsorgreatpark.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Windsor Great Park</a> are all in striking distance.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-verdict">THE VERDICT</h2>



Good for: Every occasion, whether a casual, mid-week family dinner, celebratory meal, or an indulgent treat. The Barn attracts a real mix of diners with one thing in common: a desire for great food and big flavours. 



Not for: Fine dining seekers. If you&#8217;re after dainty plates, high-octane design, and a more formal setting, head inside for <a href="https://www.dorchestercollection.com/ascot/coworth-park/dining/woven-by-adam-smith" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Woven by Adam Smith</a> &#8211; a Michelin star hottie that offers multi-course tasting menus. 



The damage: It is on the higher end. Expect to pay around £18 for a starter, mains start at £21, but average closer to £30, sides are £8 &#8211; £9, and a pud will cost you £18.
