The Street Bakeshop in Old Basing is stuff of local legend. You know, the place people queue out the door when their doughnuts drop at 11am every Thursday? Yes, I’ve tried. Yes, I’ve failed. The place is never not buzzing, so the fact it’s opening a brand-new location on Lime Square in Reading Green Park is ridiculously exciting. The bakery is famous for creating a drool-fest of homemade bakes on site, plus supplying for a load of brilliant local pubs, restaurants, and cafés. It’s coming this November, and the scenes are going to be unreal. Yes, I will be first in line.

Following the bakery theme, a brand new Warings Bakery has also just opened in Henley if you need somewhere a bit closer to home to get your sweet treat fix. Meanwhile, Wokingham’s Italian stallion Ruchetta (now renamed Angelo’s) is opening a sister site over in Reading and is being built as we speak. Official opening date to come.

As if Damson in Winterbourne closing wasn’t enough, just days after their shock announcement, Milaanj at the Beehive in White Waltham have announced they too are shutting up shop after two years in service. Gutted. The iconic pub was taken over from Dominic Chapman by owner and chef Ruchi back in November 2023, offering a funfair fusion of elevated gastropub classics with Indian flare. To date, it’s still one of my favourite meals. It’s not over though – Ruchi will continue to offer her bespoke private dining and catering services. Sending lots of Muddy love and luck.

Want something tasty to sink your chops around this autumn? How about The Roseate in Reading’s An Autumn Chapter dining experience on Fri 10 Oct (7pm)? The one-night-only evening celebrates Britain’s harvest season with a guided five-course tasting menu by Executive Chef Rajesh Maharjan, paired with wines curated by award-winning sommelier Álvaro Marcos García. Naughty, but oh-so nice. On the menu is everything from hand-dived scallop tartare to beef wellington. The price is £85pp, plus £45pp for an additional wine flight. Book here.
