Although they’ve been open just shy of a year, they sure know how to make a good brew. Plus the brunch menu, available Wed – Sun may be small, but it’s oh-so mighty. The homemade loaded banana bread is so good it’s criminal. For kids, the boiled egg and soldiers, baked beans on toast, or ham, cheese or jam sandwich should keep them happy.

Heston’s foodie haunt may be grown up and gourmet, but there’s an entire menu dedicated to pleasing the fussiest palates too. Think tomato pasta, cottage pie, and roasted chicken breast. Yum. But wait, it gets better. This Feb half term kids eat totally FREE. Yep, you heard that right. On Mon – Fri before 7pm kids under 12 enjoy a free meal with every paying adult.

The Rising Sun, Reading

This brand new gastropub opened in Reading last summer. The Rising Sun, part of the Heartwood Inns collection of trendy pubs, is located at 16 Castle Street in a gorgeous Grade II listed coaching inn (Reading’s oldest pub apparently). Inside find a tastefully suave refurb. But outside, the garden shines. Several decorated pergolas, a colourful shepherds hut bar, and eight elegantly designed and heated dining pods have our name all over it. The menu has a seasonal and sustainability focus, and the kids menu is pretty impressive. Grab two courses for an exceptionally decent £9.50 or three for £12.50.

Don’t worry, you can take the kids who’ll be spoiled with their menu. Included is minute steak and grilled chicken fillet – both served with fries and peas.
