Unleash the kids! FARE Eatery is Berkshire’s coolest new scoffing spot, having just opened in June. Located in the majestic Grade II listed Town Hall building, the restaurant is the brainchild of former Fat Duck director, Nigel Sutcliffe, and ex-Hand & Flowers chef, Josh Wilde who together work to serve seasonal, contemporary cuisine featuring a range of small to large plates. It’s flexible grazing, your way. And no compromising on style or substance when the littlies are in tow. The kids menu is short, sweet, and simple, open for breakfast on weekends, plus lunch and dinner Wed – Sun.

Milaanj at The Beehive, White Waltham

A fusion funfair nestled away in a quaint rural idyll, Milaanj at The Beehive is another newbie that also officially swung open for business in June. Trust me, it’s seriously good. The culinary concept here is a blend of global dishes and British gastropub classics, masterfully elevated with Indian flavours. Leave the grown-ups to the gourmet masterpieces. Meanwhile, kids can enjoy a more pub grub fare – fish and chips, sausage and mash, and tomato pasta are on the menu. You can’t go wrong. The best part? Until 31 Aug, kids under 12 eat half price, all day, everyday. Winner, winner.

The George & Dragon, Swallowfield

A country bolthole just five minutes down the road from our Muddy Award winners for Best Family Attraction, Wellington Country Park. The George & Dragon is a drool-fest of delicious, hearty British food and Siren craft beer on tap that puts local produce front and centre. When you’re sick of being cooped up inside, take the squad on a walk around the stunning routes right on its doorstep before hunkering down for a bite. Mini muddys will have no problem diving head first into the decent crowd-pleasing choice of nosh (fit the pickiest of eaters). On Sundays, smaller roast portions are available too.

The Boxford, Newbury

The very definition of an easy-going, family friendly restaurant, enter The Boxford, coming to you from the whizzy team behind nearby fine dining destination The Woodspeen. The relaxed, all-day dining destination only opened in November last year, serving cooked breakfasts and fresh pastries in the morning, bubbling sourdough pizza, plus a whole host of other tantalising Italian dishes. There’s loooads of options for mini diners, to the point you’d be hard pressed not to find something to please. Kids can grab two courses for £13 or three for £15. Brilliant value.

Pizza Express, Windsor

Sitting pretty opposite the King’s pad, the reliable slices at Pizza Express are sure to please the palates of tiny tots and silver foxes alike. Cop a taste of Naples alongside views of the historic castle (you’ll want to scooch your behind on one of the first floor window seats). There’s pizzas (obvs), dough balls, pastas, and puds, and we’ll let you into a lil secret. Until 11 Aug, kids eat free with any pizza or main – all day, every day.

Arrive hungry and head straight to the café to choose from breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea menus, or opt for a cake and coffee. Everything is homemade and there’s a strong farm to fork ethos here. If you can’t stay, everything on the menu can be taken away. If you’ve got little ones with you, beeline for the Hungerford location which includes a bespoke wooden indoor Play Barn guaranteed to keep your youngsters entertained, whether you’re hiding from the rain or sheltering from the sun.

The White Oak, Cookham

Great pub, fab food, and a gorgeous garden. Cookham’s The White Oak caters for the whole famalam. Kids menu, set lunch, and Sunday options are available, or bring out the big guns and go á la carte. Plus, there’s an enclosed garden for little ones giving frazzled parents five minutes peace. The Rising Sun, Reading

This brand new gastropub recently opened in Reading. The Rising Sun, part of the Heartwood Inns collection of trendy pubs, is located at 16 Castle Street in a gorgeous Grade II listed coaching inn (Reading’s oldest pub apparently). Inside find a tastefully suave refurb. But outside, the garden shines. Several decorated pergolas, a colourful shepherds hut bar, and eight elegantly designed and heated dining pods have our name all over it. The menu has a seasonal and sustainability focus, and the kids menu is pretty impressive. Grab two courses for an exceptionally decent £9.50 or three for £12.50.

Described as a ‘passion project’ by husband and wife team Simon and Olivia, Knead promises banging pizzas cooked the infamous Napoli way – at 450° in less than 90 seconds – perfect for hungry kids! Check out their super cool living wall and be sure to try a cocktail or local craft beer while the kids fill up. Hot on sustainability cred too. There’s no single use plastics, plenty of local suppliers, and e-mopeds for door-to-door deliveries.

The Shurlock Inn, Shurlock

If you’ve got a craving for steak or need to boost your iron levels, it’s got to be The Shurlock Inn – part of the Rarebreed Dining Group of boutique restaurants and cocktail bars. Their passion is premium British steak cooked over fire on Robata grills. The beef is aged in house for up to 40 days, hand cut by the chefs and basted in seasoned Wagyu fat to create an intense flavour. Licking your lips yet? Don’t worry, you can take the kids who’ll be spoiled with their menu. Included is minute steak and grilled chicken fillet – both served with fries and peas. Dessert is a chocolate brownie, ice cream or sorbet. Enjoy!

Introducing our Muddy Award winner 2024 for Best Café in Berkshire! Super cool Stables in leafy Arborfield is a hot breakfast spot, inspired by the easy-come, easy-go cafés from down under. Although they’ve been open just shy of a year, they sure know how to make a good brew. Plus the brunch menu, available Wed – Sun may be small, but it’s oh-so mighty. The homemade loaded banana bread is so good it’s criminal. For kids, the boiled egg and soldiers, baked beans on toast, or ham, cheese or jam sandwich should keep them happy.

Check out the three courses including crispy squid to start, pizza and pasta crowd pleasers, plus chicken milanese, grilled fish, and burger options.
