<p>There&#8217;s a week to celebrate pretty much everything, but by far our favourite is <strong>Afternoon Tea Week (7-13 Aug)</strong>. What&#8217;s not to love about the tiers of joy –indulgent, soothing, better value than lunch or dinner and involves a LOT of cake. <p>It&#8217;s pretty simple, you hop on the <strong><a href="https://www.afternoonteabox.com">Afternoon Tea Box</a></strong> site, order the teas that tickle your tastebuds, add a bottle of bubbles if you fancy (Prosecco, Moet &amp; Chandon Champagne or an alcohol free sparkling Chardonnay) and, hey presto, a chilled box arrives on your doorstep, wrapped in blue tissue paper, menu cards and your sandwiches and cakes carefully boxed to avoid anything arriving squashed. </p>

<p>Navigating special diets can be a nightmare. Nobody wants to get it wrong if you&#8217;re buying ingredients you need a Phd in science to understand the label. Afternoon Tea Box take the anxiety out of ordering – offering gluten free, vegan, vegetarian and children&#8217;s teas. Once delivered you have 24hrs to scoff it. Challenge accepted. </p>

<p>We are nothing but thorough at Muddy, so we sampled the Traditional and Vegetarian Afternoon Tea Boxes. In the savoury box, the delicate sandwiches filled with classics like smoked salmon and cream cheese, honey roast ham and mustard, egg sarnies from West Berkshire&#8217;s Beechwood Farm and the Coronation chicken and spiced mango which was utterly delicious. There were five fillings in each box, so lots of variety and choice.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the vegetarian box delivered mind-blowing flavours. The Cornish brie and tomato and chilli chutney was the knockout combo, but the most surprising sandwich had to be the smoked carrot and cream cheese. If I&#8217;m honest, I was approaching with caution, but the smoky carrot was a revelation. There are mini quiches in the box too, but the finger sarnies are the star of the show.</p>

<p>In the sweet box, handmade scones, strawberry jam and Rodda&#8217;s Cornish clotted cream (if you know, you know), mini macarons, a zesty lemon drizzle slice and a Caramel Heaven. I popped the scones in the oven to warm them up – you don&#8217;t have to – but I&#8217;m a sucker for a toasty scone and the smell is heaven. The Wilkins &amp; Sons mini strawberry jam pot and the Rodda&#8217;s cream are familiar friends. No shortage of cream, which is brilliant. Often you aren&#8217;t given enough, but if you like a generous dollop, you won&#8217;t be disappointed. The fruity scone were light, fluffy and took me straight back to my Devon childhood. Absolute heaven.</p>

<p>In fact all the cakes were made with an emphasis on flavour and freshness. It&#8217;s not trying to be a five star hotel tea with a pastry chef spending hours with their high shine glazes and tweezing gold leaf and edible flowers, but it&#8217;s luxurious, delicious and you don&#8217;t have to spend hours baking or agonising over the precision cutting of the sandwiches.</p>

<p>We went for a PG afternoon tea, enjoying a posh brew from the English Tea Shop teas included – English Breakfast, Darjeeling and Earl Grey. Lovely packaging and a definite upgrade on my Yorkshire Tea bags. I just wish I&#8217;d ordered one for the kids, their grubby mitts were hovering over all of the cakes. Rude.</p>

<p><strong>Good for:</strong> for gifting – a lovely treat to receive through the post, or order in for a girlie tea party for you to indulge in lashings of bubbles and clotted cream. </p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> If you&#8217;re a lover of well-turned out waiters and the buzz of an elegant tea room, then this may not scratch that itch. </p>
