Back to Xmas

John Lewis and M&S Christmas ads are here – which is your favourite?

It's that time of year again folks! Our two high street favourites are back with their festive telly offerings for 2021 - but which gets your vote?

Like opening the first door on the advent calendar and hearing the faint strains of Mariah Carey in the supermarket aisles, Christmas adverts are a sure sign that the festive season is well and truly upon us (even if it is only November!).

John Lewis and M&S are always two of the biggest heavy hitters, and this year they’re going head-to-head, landing online this morning and both airing on TV screens during The Pride of Britain Awards tonight – but which one gets your bells jingling?

John Lewis – Unexpected Guest

John Lewis Christmas ad

A mute, supernatural teen girl making Christmas lights flash and being snuck food by her adoring (yet awkward) male friend? No, it’s not Stranger Things, it’s the new John Lewis ad! This year’s advert is The Unexpected Guest, and features 14-year-old Nathan, who discovers that space traveller Skye has crash landed her spaceship in the woods near his house.

Set to a dreamy soundtrack of Together in Electric Dreams covered by South London singer Lola Young, Nathan introduces Skye to all the trappings of her first Christmas, from decs to mince pies, before gifting her with his festive jumper to take home.

Of course, it’s not a JL ad without the tie-in merch, and this year you can buy Nathan’s Christmas tree jumper (£29 for adults£14-£18 for children) with 10% of the profits being donated to FareShare and Home-Start UK.

M&S – Percy’s First Christmas

Marks and Spencer Christmas advert

First Christmases seem to be a running theme here, as Marks and Spencer’s food advert features their beloved (and delicious) mascot Percy being brought to life by an errant tree-top fairy, voiced brilliantly by Dawn French. They galavant down the aisles to inspect the festive food – making all our mouths water in the process.

M&S advert

However, not to be outdone by the likes of John Lewis, M&S also has a second ad running for their fashion, which packs loads of outfit inspo into one minute in a style that reminds us of 40s musicals like Singing in the Rain and White Christmas. It might not tug on your heartstrings – but will it loosen your purse-strings?

So, what do you think? Watch both adverts below and let us know your thoughts!

I absolutely love the John Lewis advert.
The M&S and Boots ones I think are both awful.
Percy Pig is quite amusing though!

Team Percy, but always look forward to the JL ad.
