<p>Bulldozed in 2016 and built from scratch, <a href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/hurley-house-hotel/">Hurley House</a> is a masterclass in modern rustic loveliness. The chic boutique bolthole is perhaps an unlikely location for exquisite Japanese food but you’ll find it here in spades. There’s spicy fish cakes with lemongrass or crispy fried squid with lime and green chill to start, then try and choose between black cod marinated in sweet miso and ribeye steak with a spicy soy glaze. Or, if you and your fellow diners like a challenge, opt for the Hurley House signature selection. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Miyazaki, Maidenhead</h2>

<p>If you haven’t been, get yourself to Maidenhead’s <a href="http://www.miyazaki.co.uk/">Miyazaki</a>. If you’ve been, we won’t need to tell you to return, but make sure you book a table as it’s not huge. This under-stated family-run, tiny restaurant on Queen Street, serves authentic Japanese food freshly cooked and at affordable prices too. Try the tempura dishes, the Katsu curry and the Udon soup noodles followed by green tea mochi ice cream. Yum. </p>

<p><a href="http://sushimaki.com/">Sushi Maki</a> provides a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! The menu features a range of fish, meat, vegan and vegetarian options and a kids menu. Try seabass nigiri, octopus sashimi, beef tataki or veggie ramen washed down with a sake or two. The dessert menu features Japanese pancakes and rice cakes served with coconut ice cream or green tea custard amongst other delights. Muddy highly recommends ordering the dessert platter or ‘a bit of everything’, yes please! </p>

Your biggest problem will be choosing what to try first. Whether you opt for Katsu curry, fresh-cut sushi, crispy Tempura, or the slow-braised BBQ pork belly, it’s a nice problem to have. Make sure you leave room for the green tea or black sesame ice cream. </p>

Family-run for more than 15 years, discover the true flavours of Japan delivered Tokyo-style. For the adventurous, there’s a dark dragon roll made of eel, cucumber and avocado, topped with eel sauce and ikura or try the special spicy scallop featuring crabstick and avocado with scallop, tobiko and spicy mayonnaise. There’s also an abundance of more traditional options too including maki, nigiri and sashimi. </p>

<p>Part of a small chain, Berkshire locals are spoiled for choice with Reading and Windsor branches of <a href="https://intokurestaurants.com/">Intoku</a>. Co-founder Gref trained as a sushi chef from the age of 16 and now teaches Intoku’s chefs himself, sharing the authentic methods and precision needed to create artisan sushi and other Japanese delicacies. Try the katsu don sauce, otherwise known as omelette with chicken, prawn or tofu or the surf and turf yakidon, with tiger prawns, lean beef, squid, stir fry veg and udon noodles. Desserts include bubble tea, waffles and chocolate ganache. Yum! </p>

<p>Newcomer <a href="https://sushizen.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sushizen</a> &#8211; it opened in December 2022 &#8211; already has a loyal fanbase in Newbury and word is spreading. Authentically Japanese from the food to the drinks to the mural art on the walls and the music too, you’re in for a treat. Try the lobster rolls with baby asparagus and homemade teriyaki sauce or ask for Mr Mo’s special rolls of the day. There’s also fusion sushi platters including salmon, mixed, gluten free and sharing options plus excellent vegetarian and vegan options. A few glasses of Japanese plum wine, beer or sake will wash it down nicely (or there’s green tea if you’re feeling virtuous).&nbsp;</p>
