The less populated version of its much bigger sister East Ilsley, this countryside cutie in West Berkshire is an absolute stunner, dating back beyond the Doomsday book with a thriving local community and rich equestrian heritage. Some might say it&#8217;s in the sticks, but you will be blessed with a fantastic local pub and a big fat dollop of the quiet life.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.theharrowwestilsley.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Harrow</a> (sister pub of The Blue Ball in Kintbury) overlooks the cricket green and is where all the locals head for great nosh, warm hospitality, and a proper pint in the sunny outdoor garden. Don&#8217;t be surprised to find yourself sharing a table with a few horses and their riders stopping off for a cold one. Riding is a big deal around these parts. Down the road in East Ilsley, you&#8217;ll find the <a href="https://www.crownandhorns.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Crown &amp; Horns</a> – a charming country pub with rooms. There&#8217;s always <a href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/restaurants/8-best-restaurants-in-newbury/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newbury</a> with its line up of brilliant indie eats too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shop">SHOP</h2>



<p>Spoiler alert: living so remote does have its drawbacks – one being you will have to travel for your weekly shop. Part of the charm of rural living though, right? Your nearest big shops are around a 17-min drive to Hermitage or Wantage. Food delivery could be your new BFF. <a href="https://www.britishgardencentres.com/centres/chilton-garden-centre/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chilton Garden Centre</a> is not far up the road, and for high-street shopping Newbury has a fabulous mix of boutiques and big guns. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>Your nearest GP would be Compton, Didcot or Chieveley. Spa days are calling at  <a href="https://retreatelcotpark.com/spa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Retreat at Elcot Park</a>, <a href="https://www.the-vineyard.co.uk/spa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Vineyard</a>, or <a href="https://www.donningtonvalley.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Donnington Valley</a> – grab the girls and hit the jets. Well-worth hitting up a treatment or two. Head to Didcot or Newbury for your closest gym, as well as amenities like hair salons, nail bars, physios, dentists, and vets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>Expect all the whimsicality of a chocolate box English village. There&#8217;s a church, village hall, tennis and cricket club. Expect to dust off the deck chairs in the sunnier months for the annual summer fete. There&#8217;s also East Ilsley&#8217;s historic <a href="https://www.facebook.com/EastIlsleySheepFair/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sheep Fair</a> every year which is a showcase of the best local produce, crafts, and entertainment. Don&#8217;t miss the bonfire night fireworks in front of the pub either. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>Newbury, 11 miles down the road, is your best bet. Muddy Award winning the <a href="https://cornexchangenew.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Corn Exchange</a> always has something going on, whether it&#8217;s top flight comedy, theatre, or music. Boutique <a href="https://www.watermill.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Watermill Theatre</a> is another cultural hotspot for incredible shows that often attract the attention of the theatre elite. Their <a href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/arts-culture/local-theatre-groups-for-kids-berkshire/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">youth theatre programme</a> is exceptional, FYI. For a right arty party, look no further than <a href="https://thebasegreenham.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Base</a> in Greenham for exhibitions and crafty workshops. Over in nearby South Fawley, <a href="https://www.charlottemanserceramics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Charlotte Manser Ceramics</a> is the best pottery studio around with fab courses.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s all about the outdoors. Take your pick of the breathtaking walking and cycling routes on the doorstep that is wildlife heaven. The village sits pretty on a portion of the ancient pilgrim route, the Ridgeway National Trail, which has been used for over 5,000 years and boasts stonking views of the Thames Valley. Channel your inner David Attenborough and take the family to <a href="https://livingrainforest.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Living Rainforest</a> to rub shoulders with sloths, toucans, and poison dart frogs. <a href="https://didcotrailwaycentre.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Didcot Railway Centre</a> is a fun day out and the <a href="https://newburyshowground.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newbury Showground</a> has a great lineup of events throughout the year, including annual mainstay <a href="https://newburyshowground.co.uk/newbury-show-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newbury Show</a>.</p>



<p>We also can&#8217;t talk about West Ilsley without mentioning its historic horse racing connections. In fact, it&#8217;s home to the famous Ilsley Gallops, a training ground for racehorses that&#8217;s been used for over 200 years and is accessible to the public. You&#8217;ll find esteemed trainer Mick Channon&#8217;s training yard <a href="https://www.jackchannonracing.co.uk/about-west-ilsley-stables" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">West Ilsley Stables</a> (now run by son Jack) kicking around these parts &#8211; formerly owned by none other than The Queen herself. Denis Coakley has his stables here too. </p>

Head towards Thatcham for <a href="https://www.coldashpreschool.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cold Ash Pre School</a> – the fantastic outdoor space being its crowning glory. <a href="https://www.busybeeschildcare.co.uk/nursery/wantage-ardington" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bramleys Day Nursery</a> in Ardington is another great option that offers free-flowing indoor and outdoor play, plus Welly Walks and a holistic approach through its outdoor yoga sessions that promotes physical wellbeing, mindfulness, and relaxation. Both are rated Ofsted Good. </p>

Ofsted Outstanding <a href="https://www.thedownsschool.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Downs School</a> is one of your closest secondaries and six forms. <p>Chin, chin! West Ilsley is home to Berkshire&#8217;s newest vineyard. <a href="https://www.rowlesvineyard.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rowles Vineyard</a> produced their very first bottle of Bacchus wine this year after planting 30,000 grapevines of three varieties back in 2021 across their 6.5 hectare farmland. Run by siblings William, Georgie, and Thomas, you can expect more of the nectar coming in the next few years, including Pinot Noir Rosé, a sparkling version of the same, and Seyval Blanc sparkling. </p>



<p>Until then, opt for a private dining experience among the vines or volunteer to get your hands dirty in the Autumn by helping pick the grapes. You&#8217;ll even be treated to lunch and a glass of wine as a reward. How&#8217;s that for community spirit?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>As you might expect, public transport is scarce and you will need a car to get around. Didcot Parkway is your closest station, just under 10 miles away, with direct links to London Paddington taking around 40 mins. West Ilsley is well placed near the A34 and M4, so within easy reach of Wantage, Newbury, Oxford, and other market towns.&nbsp;</p>
