Fir real! Where to buy your Christmas tree this year
Time to untangle the fairy lights and haul in the Norwegian spruce. We've found the best local options, from pick your own and potted firs to tree rentals. Up she goes!
It’s that time of year to dig out the decorations. And not a moment too soon because lord knows, we all need some cheering up. So make a space in the corner of your living room, unearth the tinsel in the loft and make a three-hour window in your diary to untangle your fairy lights. Christmas trees are a-coming!
Christmas Barn, Yattendon Estate, Yattendon
One of the big Christmas Tree players, they’ve supplied the best in the biz… Downton Abbey’s Christmas Special, Williams F1, Harrods, The Dorchester, to name drop a few. The barn is now open for business every day (Mon-Sat 9am-6pm and; Sun 9am-5pm, open until 8pm on Thu 25 Nov, 2 and 9 Dec). You can choose your tree (traditional and non-drop) before it’s netted, buy decs as you go around the oneway system and even order online and it will be delivered to your door. Open now until 23 Dec.
The Big Plant Nursery, Twyford
Christmas tree sales are go at The Big Plant Nursery alongside wreaths and foliage. These are top notch trees that’ll be the envy of your friends and family. The team can help you choose The One, and while you’re there, pick up a a few plants to pretty up the garden this winter.
Festive Tree Hire, Aborfield
A super cool idea and one that ticks the sustainability box too. Festive Tree Hire offers a rental service from their treemporium in Aborfield Cross, (free delivery (free within 5 miles, paid delivery across Berkshire, Hants and Surrey) – open daily from 27 Nov to 19 Dec, 9am to 6:30pm. There’s even the option to reserve the exact same tree for next Chrimbo too, should you become deeply attached to your fir.
The Christmas Tree Shop, Windsor Great Park
The Queen’s 20ft Norway Spruce at Windsor Castle is cut from her back garden – and you can have one too. It might not be a royal whopper that takes 13 hours to decorate but the Nordmann Firs and Norway spruces have plenty of regal splendour. The shop also has logs, wreaths, fresh holly and mistletoe, gorgeous decs and fresh game. Just add mulled wine and you’re good to go deck the halls crazy. Head to the Forest Gate from 26 Nov – 19 Decec (Mon-Fri, 11am–7pm and Sat-Sun, 9am-5pm).
Newbury Christmas Tree Farm, Newbury
Christmas trees don’t come fresher than this! This is a choose and cut farm just off the A34 near Woodspeen. Explore our 25-acre plantation and pick your own tree from the thousands grown and then watch then… timbeeeeeeer – watch one of our friendly staff chop it down. Nordmann Fir, Norway Spruce and Fraser Fir all available.
Lambourn Christmas Tree Farm, Sheepdrove, Lambourn
A family run farm just outside Lambourn with 7,000 beautiful trees waiting to fulfil their Christmas destiny. It’s a choose and chop farm, so rock around the Nordman Firs, find your fave and, chop chop, it’ll be cut there and then, slipped into a bio-degradable netting and off you go. The farm is open every day from 1 Dec – 20 Dec, 9am-4pm.
Green Christmas Trees, Wokingham
This place, would you believe it, sells Christmas trees. (I know, I know – it’s nominative determinism of unprecedented proportions.) Green Christmas Trees can be found at the Olde Leathern Bottel pub on the Barkham Road is now open for business every day (7.30am-7pm) until the 18 Dec. You can choose your tree (traditional and non-drop) before it’s netted and then the helpful staff will take it to your car.
This excellent garden centre in the village of Aldermaston is making picking out your tree a total joy. There are both cut and potted trees available in both Norway Spruce and Nordmann Fir varieties, and you can scoff a free mince pie while you’re choosing. Plus there’s decorations and gifts in the shop and you can book Breakfast with Santa for your littlies or treat yourself to a festive afternoon tea.
Caversham Court Gardens, Caversham
If you like to buy your tree with hint of old fashioned grandeur, head to Caversham Court Gardens. Christmas Tree sales kick off from Saturday 4 Dec. Not only can you pick up your gorgeous tree in the grounds of this historic park, you can pick up unique decorations to add to your tree, gifts and there will be a band giving you all the festive feels.
Wokingham Christmas Trees, Wokingham
This family-run farm on the London Road in Wokingham does a roaring trade in traditional and Nordmann trees every winter, which can be hand-prunes to get that perfect Christmas tree shape (talk about a perfectionist!). It’s open 9am-7pm, offering local delivery for a tenner.
Cook & Clark Christmas Trees, Reading
Just off the M4 at junction 12, you’ll find Cook & Clark, a family run business selling Nordmann Firs and Norway Spruces in all sizes. Choose your tree online or in person (for collection or delivery) or pop along in person from 27 Nov, they’ll add a stand if you need one and you can wild with the upsells by adding a fresh wreath and festive wooden reindeer. Why not? Go big or go home.
Pines and Needles, Wendover Woods
Lols, who doesn’t love a fir tree pun? No? Well, I’m amused. Anyway, if you want to pick your tree in a bonafide woodland setting, this is your stop. Selling trees from 3ft up to a whopping 12ft (for those of us with atriums, I assume), you’ll find the store open from 28 November until 24 December – weekdays, 10am-5pm and weekends, 8am to 5pm.
The Tree Barn, Watlington
Just outside Watlington, The Tree Barn at Christmas Common (again, no confusion here as to the purpose of this venture) is one of the big Christmas Tree players, delivering robust spruces to Downing Street no less. If you fancy mingling with the Christmas Tree elite, you can either click & collect, have your tree delivered, or roam the store/barn in person where there is, literally, every conceivable bauble you can buy. It’s open every day, 9am-5.30pm and until 7.30pm on Thursdays and Fridays, if you fancy swerving the masses.
