Cliveden, Taplow

Cliveden in spring is a sight to behold with an entire valley of daffodils as far as the eye can see. Muddy recommends heading to Blenheim Pavilion at the end of the Long Garden for particularly gorgeous blooms. If not, they’re practically everywhere. In 2024, the gardening team planted some 11,000 Narcissi ‘Carlton’ daffodils which were on display in the Long Garden. Make sure you don’t miss the show-stopping six acre south parterre, a Cliveden highlight too. Feeling frisky? Try rolling down the parterre slope – don’t let the kids have all the fun! Catch the daffs until the end of April.

Lower Bowden Manor, Pangbourne

For literal carpets of daffs, head to Lower Bowden Manor for a swan around the 7 acres by appointment only. The gardens are opening this year as part of the National Garden Scheme for groups between 6 and 50. It’s a spring dream with stunning views, a pond, Versailles planters, and an orchard stacked with daffodils, and later, a wave of white hydrangeas. Tickets are £10 per adult and free for kids but must be organised with the owner beforehand.

Highclere Castle, Newbury

The biggest star of Downton Abbey? No, Carson it’s not you or the Earl of Grantham’s labradors – Highclere Castle takes the crown. Daffodils are breaking for cover in the Capability Brown gardens of Earl and Countess Carnarvon’s ancestral home. Head over from 12 Apr for the Spring Public Opening, costing £22.50pp.

Stubbings House, Maidenhead

Another bloomin’ lovely National Garden Scheme cutie is Stubbings House – a C18 Grade II listed house (not open), home to Queen Wilhelmina of Netherlands in WW2. The woodland walks bring with them an abundance of daffodils come March, and if you fancy another visit, you’ll be able to feast your eyes on the 60 metre wall of wisteria in May. Open 15 & 16 March and 10 & 11 May. £5 per adult.

The Valley Gardens, Windsor Great Park

Visit this enchanting woodland of trails and floral displays, including exquisite miniature daffodils. They’re so impressive the area is called Daffodil Valley (located in the Valley Gardens). You’ll also spot daffs in Spring Wood at The Savill Garden (both Virgina Water and The Savill Garden are part of the gorgeous Windsor Great Park estate). This is bird nesting season too, so try and keep the kids quiet and you might spot some fledglings or, if you’re really lucky, the young deer in Deer Park.

Greys Court, Henley

A smidge over the border in Henley, but worth the trip to see the magical walled gardens, you’ll find neatly clipped topiary and winding paths at Elizabethan estate Greys Court. Alongside the orchard – featuring miniature pear and apple trees – the flower beds are full to brimming with daffodils (and tulips too). The Cowshed Tea Room is open daily for hot food and snacks if you need to refuel.

Ashdown House, Lambourn

Fresh air and a mindful meander around some of Berkshire’s beautiful estates. Head to Ashdown House, the National Trust’s under the radar Dutch-style country house near Lambourn, built by Lord William Craven for Elizabeth Stuart – the woman known as the Winter Queen. It’s a great spot to wander around the ornamental parterre garden and ancient woodland where you’ll see daffodils, Balleroy Highland ponies and Alfred’s Castle. The house itself reopens in April FYI.

The Vyne, near Basingstoke

A stunning, 500 year-old Tudor manor house-turned-family home, The Vyne is one of the largest properties in Hampshire (it’s just across the Berks border). Daffodils can be seen in abundance on the south drive by the mansion and they line the paths through the walled gardens too. You’ll also see spring blossom in the orchard where heritage varieties of apple, pear and plum grow. Once you’ve had a good explore, head for a deckchair and take in the lovely views across the lake to the parkland and woods beyond. If you sit there long enough, the bluebells will be out in May!

Sandham Memorial Chapel, Burghclere

National Trust treasure Sandham Memorial Chapel is a 1920s red-brick building located in a quiet corner of Hampshire, near Newbury. Designed for reflection and peace, there are plenty of places to sit and take in the beautiful spring blooms. There’s a pretty cottage-style garden and an orchard but the best place for daffs is undoubtedly the meadow, which bursts into life in the spring, with the yellow flowers popping their heads up before wild flowers follow. There’s no café onsite, but it’s a lovely spot for a picnic and there’s a pub, The Carpenters Arms, just across the road. Reopens 6 Mar.

Nuffield Place, near Henley

Nuffield Place was once home to one of the richest men of the 20th century, Lord Nuffield, founder of Morris Motor Cars. Today, the four-acre garden is the perfect place for a spring stroll. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, wander along the criss-crossing paths through a combo of lawns and mixed beds which retain their original irregular shapes with brick edges, the perfect home for sunny daffodils from 5 Mar. There’s also magnolia and cherry trees to enjoy, while in late spring the wisteria blooms around the house. Bliss!

Streatley, Goring Gap

A spring awakening on the Streatley hills. A stunning three-mile walk that will reward you with views, bright yellow daffs and buttercups. Oh, and you’ll get your step count up too! You’ll cross meadows, woodlands and (endangered) chalk grasslands with panoramic views towards the Chiltern Hills, the North Wessex Downs and the Oxford Vale, with glimpses of the River Thames as it passes through the Goring Gap.
