The Pot Kiln, Frilsham
You’re in Basque Country now! The Pot Kiln is a chocolate box country pub offering Spanish-inspired dishes with a strong sharing ethos.
Deep in the heart of rural Berkshire might be the last place you expect to find a pub offering a menu of Spanish delights – taking influence from the northern Basque Country. But after reopening in June 2024 following a hugeee £750,000 face lift, taking over six months to complete, the once traditional Pot Kiln pub decided it wanted to do things a bit differently.
Now, you can expect a pick ‘n’ mix of Spanish plates and a tapas-style dining culture. Dig into wild boar scotch eggs, salt cod croquetas, gambas, lemon & chili, red tuna tartare, and lamb chuletas. But their real show-stoppers are the giant platters of carefully tended and cured meat and fish. The 12 hour lamb shoulder or Galician blond “txuletón” – aged Basque rib of beef are pure indulgence.
While this is a proper dining destination, its roots are still firmly planted as a classic English pub (the beer most certainly is), with simple pub snacks and locally sourced ingredients. Gluten-free and plant-based menus are also available.
The space itself is breezy, rustic, and stylish with a sensational open kitchen taking centre stage with a huge charcoal fired parilla grill and a brick oven. Almost everything is cooked on the grill in front of you. The Pot Kiln’s bar has enjoyed a big extension, plus there’s a stunning private dining room, and impressive new outdoor pizza oven. Don’t miss Sunday evening pizzas – best enjoyed on the sweeping and south-facing outdoor terrace.
Want to make a weekend of it? Done. There’s seven gorgeous guest bedrooms outside in the landscaped gardens, with two offering an additional sofa bed in the room if required. Each Superior Room even comes with its own terrace to soak up the sun.
