The Halfway Inn, Newbury
A country pub that hugs! This buzzy former coaching inn offers comforting seasonal dishes and cosy vibes for grown ups, kids and your faithful hounds.
The Halfway Inn is a newly refurbished, vibrant pub offering the warmest of welcomes. Previously a boarded up hospitality casualty, owners owners Nick and Jo Moreton have breathed new life into the place – and it’s good. really good.
Nestled just outside Newbury, on the A4 Bath Road to Hungerford, you may be forgiven for thinking Halfway is so called because it is the midway point between Newbury and Hungerford. Not so *wags finger* It is in fact 62 miles from Bristol and 62 miles from London. Built in the 18th century, on the site of a former toll-house which collected payment from passing travellers, this cosy country pub oozes history.
Cross the threshold and you’ll discover exposed brick, open fires, reading nookS, stone flag and wooden floors, exposed beams and sleeping dogs at the feet of their owners. It’s a big pub but somehow retains the cosy vibes. It’s a place you want to hangout, whether it’s for a cheeky drink or a laid-back lunch. Outside the enclosed garden has also had a makeover and there are plans afoot to add an outdoor bar and kitchen.
The food? Well it’s very good. Portion sizes are generous, but there’s plenty to seduce you from light bites to the full three courses. Produce is sourced locally where possible and you’ll find Vicar’s Game meat and fresh Brixham fish on the menu. Likewise, local sparkling wine producer All Angels, is the bubbles of choice here.
Honestly, this is the kind of country pub you want as you local.
