Spring loaded: the only looks you need to know
The high street is awash with new fashion goodies. Overwhelmed? Here are the trends worth splashing your cash on – and the one we'll be giving a wide berth.
A deluge of tempting new season collections are filtering on to the high street right now. More than ever, we’re trying to shop mindfully (do you really need that? Will you wear it enough?) which means sifting carefully through all those shiny new SS22 trends and working out what actually works for us – our bodies, wardrobes, budgets and lifestyles. We rifled through the rails at indie department store, Camp Hopson in Newbury to find eight you might like to give a whirl… and one that’s a NO from us.
1/ COLOUR COLUMNS
Bold, brave and bright! As were living in a permanent state of crisis, we’re seeking happy highs in other areas of our lives. Wearing head to toe colour is like taking a happy pill, boosting your mood inside and out – get the shade right and you’ll get a youthful glow too. We’re candy crushing hard on this relaxed Emme Marella Miss Piggy pink suit, which also comes in a Kermit The Frog green. Dopamine dressing is hot.
2/ MAXED OUT
The midi has reigned supreme for some time, now but the floor-skimming maxi is back in 2022. Great to cover pasty skin and unshaven legs. This is a hem length that we can all get on board with (especially if you’re not an excessive groomer). Having carried out a full fashion risk assessment, we’d recommend a length that stops at the ankle. There’s nothing stylish falling flat on your face when you foot gets caught in a fabric. Flounce over to Ted Baker, Mint Velvet and Emme to get the look.
This is your official warning. Training begins now to get you back in heels. The good news is that pin thin stilettos are out and platforms are in (um, did it ever go away?). According to Google Trends, searches for platform shoes have doubled in the last year. Now it’s going to be hard to give up our trainers and slippers, but the illusion of endless leg could just nail it. There is still a strong lean towards sensible sandals, with varying degrees of heel height that are good for walking, partying or for simply being chauffeur-driven in. I’ve got my beady on on these LK Bennett beauties. Love the colour, love the stripe, love that I won’t be stuck in the lawn like a tent peg.
4/ WIDE STRIDES
Shopping for jeans? Gulp! Fit is everything and a full scale changing room meltdown is pretty much guaranteed. So where can you find size inclusivity and styles to suit all shapes. Yup, Levi’s. Making jeans since 1853, they are your go-to for this season’s widerstyles. RIP skinnies (for now), it’s time to embrace a 90s wider leg. You’re looking for off duty model vibes rather than wannabe boy bander. Straight and Loose and Barrel legs are having their moment. Choose classic 501s or 314s which have a bit of stretch for comfort and a tummy slimming panel. The High Loose jean has a 90s Kate Moss vibe about them and come full length or ankle grazing.
5/ LOW KEY LUXE
Sitting in a far quieter zone is a rise in luxury, wearable wardrobe staples. Not boring. We’re not talking pricey basic tees, more low-key investment pieces with interesting twists: a trench coat with a unique label, a co-ord set with quirky buttons, a pair of tailored trousers in a more unusual silky-satin finish. Spring see the return of the mac, and Max Mara have some corkers with the kind of design details that give that designer game away but will transcend all trends. Prices for a trench start at £370.
If ever there was a brand that epitomises the word ‘preppy’ it is Ralph Lauren. Camp Hopson now stocks the Lauren by Ralph Lauren collection and it’s got all the classic RL stripes, cricket jumpers, mini skirts and blazers you’ll need to pull off this easy spring summer uniform.
7/ MATCHY MATCHY
Why do we love co-ords? Because it’s your get up and go fashion BFF. If you’re time poor or simple don’t have the energy or inclination to plan a whole outfit, the co-ord gets the job done in seconds. The rules? Well they aren’t many, to be honest. Your top and your bottom just need to match. There are tons of styles to choose from knitted, party pyjamas, slouchy suits, loungewear and more. More versatile than a dress and easier to go to the loo in than a jumpsuit, matchy matchy just makes sense. Check out United Colours of Benetton, this show-stopping blouse and palazzo pants are as comfy a PJs, but totally acceptable to wear out of the house. Just don’t forget to change your slippers.
8/ BIG BLAZER
The oversized blazer has been a staple for a while and is going absolutely nowhere. If you don’t own one, invest. It will be the workhorse your wardrobe for that polished cool girl vibe. Just like the sport bra, it’s on a staples list and can be thrown over anything: floaty dresses, loungewear, jeans and tee. For brands that nail effortless sharp tailoring, rifle through the rails at Emme Marella for stylish neutrals and bold bright options.
ER, NO THANKS
I’m getting all clammy just thinking about what underwear to put on. Cut-outs are hot but high risk. You’re definitely not going to be able to wear your Spanx and support bra in this sexy little number from US designer Christian Siriano. It’s rocked the red carpet, but it’s a hard look to pull off unless your Julia Roberts in 1990 or under the age of 18. Plus in my best nanna voice, ‘you’ll catch your death’.
