10 super spa days in Berkshire

A little pampering goes a long way especially as we head into the colder darker months. Here's the best spa days in Berkshire. And relaaax.

We’ve scraped through lockdown and survived a summer of cancelled foreign holidays, rainy staycays and expensive days out. So I’m calling it… Self Care September is GO! And I can’t think of a better antidote to the past 18 months than spending a day fragrantly wafting around in a fluffy white robe and pampering yourself within an inch of your life.

Cliveden House Spa, Taplow

Cliveden Hotel spa Berkshire luxury spa with stunning guest relaxation room

Strip down like a Sixties showgirl and get yourself to Cliveden Spa. Loved by celebs, royalty and Muddy editors, it’s a stylish, light filled space of whites and neutrals with deco-inspired touches. The Grade II listed Profumo pool – where Christine Keeler flouted the no heavy petting rule with John Profumo – is FAB-U-LOUS. Inside, there’s another pool, jacuzzi, infrared sauna, steam room and 7 treatment rooms with the most incredible water mattresses. There’s a gym for anyone suffering from spa guilt (no, me neither) and a lovely cafe. It’s grand, beautiful and a ton of packages to choose from.

Muddy treatment: Get your glow on, lady, and plump for the award-winning Oskia Signature Facial. The treatment instantly boosts skin tone and texture, and delivers that all important youthful glow.

Thames Lido, Reading

Thames Lido Reading open air pool and restaurant

Muddy award-winning spa 2019 and 2021, Thames Lido, is as quirky as it is unique. Sandwiched between Reading train station and the River Thames, it’s an oasis of escapism and in a town centre location. Built in Edwardian times as a women’s-only swimming bath, the pool was fed by water from the river (er, gross), but is now a cool, stylish urban retreat with Scandi vibes at its core. There’s a simplicity to Thames Lido. The pool is lusciously low in chlorine, the food is to die for and there’s an outdoor hot tub, saunas and Treatment rooms for a massage, facial of exfoliation.

Muddy treatment: The classic massage is a must. You can choose a relaxing rub down or a more concentrated massage for problematic aches and pains. All I can tell you is they are the best. Swim, massage and meal costs £90pp.

Coworth Park, Sunningdale

Coworth Park crescent shaped modern spa and gym surrounded by grass

Not the Jetson’s futuristic crash pad, but Coworth Park‘s award-winning sustainable spa in Sunningdale. If you’re looking for a spa day that’s indulgent and makes you feel like a new woman, Coworth ticks all the boxes. There are a number of spa packages to choose from to suit your time and budget. Morning, afternoon, evening, spa days and overnighters.

Muddy treatment: Plump for the Personalised Spa Day (£250pp). There are five 90min treatments to choose from. Our fave? The Hebridean Salt Scrub and Seaweed Body Wrap by ishga Organic which eliminate toxins, reduces cellulite and improves skin tone.

The Floating Spa, Monkey Island Estate, Bray

Ahhhh, The Floating Spa. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in quirkiness. Monkey Island Estate is a très chichi boutique hotel that opened on an historic private island in the middle of the Thames. So a converted barge as a boutique spa is exactly what we would expect. Permission to board? I should coco. You’ll find  three treatment rooms, a themed wheelhouse reception and an elixir bar.

Muddy treatment: The Monks’ Elixir – booze, botany and beauty. Inspired by the Augustinian monks that settled in Bray this treatment starts with an alcoholic tipple (booze free also available), before you relax into a full body massage while lathered in a house-cured herbal oil infused with arnica, angelica, melisse and lightly scented with essential oils of frankincense.

Nirvana Spa, Sindlesham

Gladiators of glow, this is your time. Nirvana Spa is biggest day spa in Berks offering endless facilities, including the new Colosseum Suite with its pool surrounded by loungers. Elsewhere you’ll find a restorative celestial floatation five pure pools, spa garden, thermal suite, treatment rooms, gym and more more more. Let’s not forget you’ll be walking in the footsteps of Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue who splashed around int he pool for the video of their duet on Swing When You’re Winning. Spa days from £50.

Muddy treatment: Firm up your wobbly bits and get your glow on. The 80 min Illuminating, vitamin C face and body ritual is our pick. A top to toe treatment with illuminating facial, energising exfolation and firming wrap. The powerful vitamin C brightens the skin.

Wellington Wellbeing, Stratfield Saye

To keep that wellbeing cup topped up, how about a Wellbeing private members club? The brainchild of Jemma Kidd (the Countess of Mornington) Wellington Wellbeing has just launched in Stratfield Saye on the Duke of Wellington’s 7,000 acre country estate. It provides Wellington Wellbeing with a serene and secluded backdrop to workout, unwind and recharge. In The Barn you’ll find two studios, a café, cryotherapy and infrared sauna. The gym is in The Stable and you can head out into The Meadow for walks, workouts and meditation.

Muddy treatment: OK, so not a traditional spa, but an investment in your wellness. Give Cryotherapy a try. It’s the perfect chill (literally). You’ll be immersed into a chamber set at -85° which gives your body a kick up the arse to release endorphins, boost blood circulation, increase metabolism, detoxify cells and activate healing processes. Athletes swear by it.

Saddlestone Spa, Highclere

Small but perfectly formed. If you you love a spa for the treatments rather than the robe wafting by the pool, then Saddlestone Spa in Highclere is a wellbeing secret you need to know. Owner Hollie, who has worked in London spas, has created a totally unique, boutique experience in a woodland location near Highclere Castle.

Muddy treatment: Did someone say tightening and toning? The Targeted Detox Package (Targeted Toning Tightener and Thousand Flower Detox Wrap) invigorates your bod with a blend of salts, minerals and seaweeds to target cellulite and poor skin tone on hips, thighs, abdomen and backs of arms. The result is a targeted body airbrush and skin that looks and feels intensely toned and refreshed.

The Vineyard Hotel, Stockcross

A boutique spa one of the UK’s finest wine hotels. Sign me up and pop that cork we’re coming in. Waft around The Vineyard Spa in a fluffy robe, enjoy treatments, using the hotel’s red grape products and there’s 30,000 bottles nestling in the cellar ready for you to retox after the detox. An oasis of bliss and I’ve heard good things about new chef Tom Scade’s food.

Muddy treatment: Feet are often overlooked, but boy do they take a battering. Using red grape products, the Foot Ritual is a treatment that exfoliates your hooves before a massage to relieve aches and tired feet. The massage works over reflex points your entire body benefits from the tension-easing benefits.

Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa, Newbury, Berkshire

Donnington Valley Spa swimming pool

How does seven hours of ‘me time’ grab you? Don’t mind if I do. Donnington Valley Spa, just off the M4, is a light, bright haven to max out on R&R. The minimalist styling, modern art and epic wine list will have you California dreaming before you know it. Set over two levels, the guest relaxation and treatment rooms are upstairs while the 18m indoor pool, jacuzzi, aromatherapy and steam rooms are on the ground. The treatments menu is extensive – and great value for money! Packages start at £82.

Muddy treatment: Autumn chill and the shock of central havoc can play havoc, so give your face a helping hand with the Ultimate Vitamin Glow Facial. This internationally renowned, multi-award winning facial
is power-packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants.

Fairmont Windsor Park, Old Windsor

Fairmont Windsor Park VIP-Treatment

We’re more excited than a kid on Christmas Eve. Fairmont Windsor Park from The Savoy stable, is the new kid of the Berkshire block. They have spent a staggering £140m on the super-luxe two storey spa at this new five star hotel. What can you expect? It’s a Generation Game conveyor belt of indulgence – indoor lap pool, outdoor vitality pool, treatment rooms, salt room, thermal suite, Hammam, Japanese foot spa, hair salon… food processor and a cuddly toy.

Muddy treatment: It’s hard to say, it’s not actually open yet. But we like the sound of Vitamin Infusions, Precision Maintenance and the traditional Cleansing Hammam Experience sounds interesting.
