I’m no Mary Berry, but I do like baking. The results are mixed, but the process is as cathartic for me as yoga might be for others. To say my skills are basic is an understatement, but Gaye Perry at The Real Macaron Company swore blind she could have me making macarons like a pro, no experience necessary.

Blow me down, she was true to her word. The classes are small, friendly and informal and are available in Berkshire and Hampshire. If macarons are not your bag (are you mad?), you can learn to make doughnuts (er, yes please), bread, American Brownies or go for the full monty and master the art of baking a delicious afternoon tea. Gift vouchers make a great gift too.

Great for hen parties, birthdays and corporate dos, and you get to take home what you make (if you haven’t scoffed before you reach your front door). If you want to add fizz to your class festivities (always), this can all be arranged too.

Kids GBBO obsessed and love cooking, the ‘Bake With Me’ classes are the perfect chance to hone their skills and bespoke kids party can be arranged. A great alternative to pass the parcel.

Of course, you can bypass the DIY and just get your mitts on a show-stopping sweet treat, The Real Macaron Company can create a tower of macarons that’s totally unique to you and your style. All you need to do is agree on the colour scheme and flavours and Gaye will work her magic – resulting in something truly bespoke for your big day or event. And if the nanas insist on cake, Gaye will wave her baking wand and make this happen too.
