Can you tell where it is yet? Perhaps the famous wine producing regions of France or Italy? Er, California? Nope, it’s Twyford. Stanlake Park Estate has had a long and colourful history dating back to the Tudor period but in recent times has made a name for itself as seriously good vineyard – producing quality English wines.

This stunning 10-acre vineyard, is the perfect place for wine-enthusiasts – or those, like me, who know nothing about vino but love the taste – to delight in all kinds of grape experiences. This is a Berkshire hidden gem – the tours are brilliant and the samples are generous (taxiiiiiii), plus there’s a well-stocked cellar shop and wine bar and garden where all Stanlake Park’s wines are available by the glass with no restaurant mark up. To enhance flavour and soak up some of the alcohol, sharing boards of cheeses, charcuterie and olives are also served. Happy days… HIC!

The vineyard is run by husband and wife team Nico Centonze and Natalia Pezzone. Nico grew up among the vineyards in Southern Italy and has developed his career in several countries, with a professional, hands-on approach. Natalia is a wine educator and organises tasting events. Basically she knows her stuff and has completed a WSET diploma.

Although English wine is probably best known for its fizz (the south of England and France’s Champagne region have similar climates and soil), Stanlake’s 30,000 vines make white, red and rosé and sparking wines. Nico and Natalia have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of what is produced and have started rebranding the bottles with stunning floral illustrations. We’re big fans of the award-winning Bacchus, a fruity English white wine and a lip-smacking local alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Picpoul de Pinet. We’re also keen on the delicious Pinot Noir Rosé.

If you do nothing else, you must book onto the vineyard tour. Stanlake Park is drop dead gorgeous – and possibly one of the most beautiful places in county. Buy direct from the cellar shop (you get so much more wine for your wedge). Muddy highly recommends going a step further and treating yourself to a staycation among the grapevines. There are two gorgeous recently renovated cottages – romantic hideaway North Lodge and South Lodge, which can accommodate eight guests. No need to book that taxi either!

Oh, and if you’re looking for a unique party or wedding venue, you can do that here too. Can you imagine? I’d get hitched all over again, just to do that here. It’s a very special place and you’ll feel reassured the bar would never run dry.
