Goat on the Roof, Newbury

A stylish restaurant and wine bar serving British tapas, showcasing the UK’s best producers, with a foxy selection of natural wines and artisan drinks.

Small plates are where it’s at in the restaurant world, so excitement levels peaked when Goat On The Roof opened in Newbury. It’s a British tapas restaurant and wine bar, showcasing the very best UK produce and a natural wines.

Owned and run by Patrick Vaughan-Fowler and head chef Sam May, they have transformed the old Lloyds Bank building on Bridge Street into a chic eaterie that isn’t too try hard with its the decor, but the attention to detail will be appreciated – from the tiled bar area and eye catching art to the artisan mismatched plates and elegant marble topped tables.

On the ground floor you’ll find the restaurant and upstairs is wine bar for pre-dinner drinks or just because it’s drinks o’clock. The wine selection is really interesting. To keep the carbon footprint low, they’re all from the UK and Europe, with lots of organic and natural varieties to sample.

As for the food, each dish is lavished with love. Their version of patatas bravas took three years to get right and I can confirm they’re epic. The menu covers all basis and you can eat as little or as much as you want – settle in the long haul or grab a bite before the cinema/theatre. It’s one of those easy breezy restaurants that becomes a foodie favourite.
