<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-can-i-make-the-most-of-my-excess-cash">How can I make the most of my excess cash?</h3>



<p>Before you start investing, it’s wise to build an emergency fund—ideally covering three to six months of living expenses. This safety net offers instant peace of mind when life throws you a curveball. Keep it in a high-interest savings account, separate but accessible, so you&#8217;re not tempted to dip into it for everyday spending.</p>



<p>Once that’s in place, <strong>ISAs</strong> are your best friend. You can invest up to £20,000 a year, tax-free (subject to change with each budget), and for those under 18, a <strong>Junior ISA</strong> allows up to £9,000 annually—giving your mini-me a head start. With a little planning, your money can grow quietly and tax-free while you get on with living fabulously.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-so-where-should-i-be-putting-my-money">So, where should I be putting my money?</h3>



<p>Choosing where to put your money comes down to what you want from it. If you like playing it safe, a <strong>Cash ISA</strong> is a solid bet. It’s like a savings account in a tax-free wrapper. Your money isn’t invested, so there’s little risk, making it perfect for short-term savings or for anyone who doesn&#8217;t want to take any risk.</p>



<p>Feeling braver? Try a <strong>Stocks and Shares ISA</strong>. This one invests your money in the stock market – think shares (which give you a tiny ownership stake in a company), bonds and funds. It’s riskier than a cash ISA and can be a bit of a rollercoaster as the value of your investments can go up and down. But with that risk comes the potential for higher returns over the long term, making it a smart choice for those focused on growth. Plus, any gains, dividends, or interest you earn are completely tax-free. Think of it as the difference between a sensible flat shoe and a sky-high stiletto — both useful, depending on the occasion.</p>

<p>I get it — investing can sound terrifying, but it is well-worth considering if you have savings you don’t plan to touch for at least three years. If you leave it all in cash, it can shrink rather than grow. Inflation slowly nibbles away at its value — that’s what’s known as loss of purchasing power. Think of it this way: £100 might have bought you 10 cinema tickets in 2020, but by 2025, with prices doubled, it’ll only stretch to 5. Same £100, fewer nights out. Investing gives your money the chance to keep up — and even outpace — rising prices.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-do-i-start-then">Where do I start then?</h3>



<p>Dipping your toe into the world of investing can feel like stepping into a whole new world, but it’s more accessible than ever. All investing involves risk, so if you’ll need the money within the next three years, it’s usually best to stick with cash. If your goals are longer-term, you’ve got options: go DIY and manage your investments yourself (cheaper, but make sure you do your research properly), or work with a financial adviser or wealth management company who can help build a strategy that fits your goals, budget, and appetite for risk.</p>



<p><strong>My simple six-step guide to getting started:</strong></p>

<li><strong>Build an Emergency Fund</strong> – Save 3–6 months of expenses first.</li>



<li><strong>Set a Goal</strong> – Know what you&#8217;re investing for and what you are trying to achieve.</li>



<li><strong>Pick a Platform</strong> – Interactive Investor, Nutmeg, or Hargreaves Lansdown are great options.</li>



<li><strong>Start Small</strong> – Even £25 a month is enough.</li>



<li><strong>Choose Low-Risk Funds</strong> – Diversified funds or government bond ETFs (more on that in a minute).</li>



<li><strong>Be Consistent</strong> – Invest regularly and get comfortable with the idea that your investments will move up and down from day to day.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-the-most-risk-free-and-easiest-way-to-invest">What&#8217;s the most risk-free and easiest way to invest?</h3>



<p>Looking for a calm, no-drama way to invest? Here&#8217;s a few options to get you started. <strong>High-interest savings accounts</strong> are the simplest: they’re safe, easy to open through your bank, and pay around 2–5% interest while letting you dip in whenever you need. <strong>Premium Bonds</strong> <strong>(NS&amp;I)</strong> are another gentle entry point — they’re 100% backed by the government, and while you won’t earn regular interest, you could win up to £1 million in the monthly prize draw (yes, really). They are just that tad more exciting too.</p>



<p>Want something steady for the long term? <strong>Government Bonds (Gilts)</strong> offer predictable returns around 4–5% and are about as low-risk as it gets. Again, they are backed by the government, with platforms like Hargreaves Lansdown or Interactive Investor being great places to start.</p>



<p>Lastly, if you’re ready to try your hand at the markets, you can try a <strong>diversified multi-asset fund</strong>, which spreads your investment across a mix of assets classes to smooth out the bumps while giving you access to global growth. It&#8217;s worth noting the risk on this one can vary. The return is linked to global markets, so look for diversified, low-volatility options which are available through most investment platforms. This one&#8217;s great for long-term investing with broad exposure.</p>
