WHAT? WHERE?

Set in 30 leafy acres just outside Ascot High Street, St George’s Ascot is a small independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18 that’s on the cusp of an exciting new chapter. From September 2027, boys will begin joining Years 7 and 9 as the school starts its transition back to co-education, becoming fully co-ed by 2029. There are currently around 210 pupils, with roughly a quarter choosing one of the school’s flexible boarding options.

The school has an intriguing history. Founded in 1877 as a boys’ prep school (a certain Winston Churchill was once among its pupils), it became an all-girls school in 1923. Now, more than a century later, it’s coming full circle as part of the newly formed St Albans Education Group, creating a through-school education from age three to 18 alongside St George’s School Windsor Castle.

There’s an appealing balance between countryside calm and commuter convenience. The Victorian heart of the school is complemented by modern teaching, arts and boarding facilities, all surrounded by spacious grounds that feel more rural retreat than town school. Yet Ascot station is just a complimentary shuttle ride away, London is easily reachable and the cafés and shops of the high street are within walking distance. Independence with a side of Frappuccino? Teenagers could certainly think of worse.

FACILITIES

St George’s is quite understated at first glance, but you cannot fail to be impressed by the light, bright classrooms, swish sports facilities, all the tech, as well as elegant interiors. It’s an old school but has a thoroughly modern provision and outlook. The state-of-the-art music technology room, recording studio, and investment in solar panels are just a couple of signs that this school is very much looking to the future. Perhaps most impressive, though, is that the school manages to combine all of this with an unpretentious feel. Nothing comes across as showy or built purely for open-day wow factor. Instead, the facilities feel well used, well-loved and very much part of everyday school life.

SPORT

It’s fair to say, sportiness is in these girls’ DNA. But refreshingly, it doesn’t feel all-consuming. Netball may still be the headline act, with St George’s regularly reaching national finals and pupils selected for Premier League Netball Player Development Programmes, but the offering has broadened considerably in recent years. Football and cricket have become firmly established alongside traditional favourites, reflecting the changing landscape of girls’ sport, while pupils can also choose from swimming, athletics, tennis, volleyball, water polo, synchronised swimming, dance and riding (off-site). The school’s most successful sportswoman is a national runner (impressive). In the past they have also had talented equestrians and swimmers, which I think demonstrates the breadth of opportunity.

One of the crown jewels is the school’s superb 25-metre, six-lane indoor heated swimming pool, complete with competition timing equipment and spectator gallery, home to the school’s award-winning Performance Swimming Programme and a much-used community facility. Elsewhere there’s a large sports hall with indoor cricket nets, a strength and conditioning gym, squash court, athletics track, six floodlit netball courts (are you keeping up?), eight tennis courts and acres of playing fields. There’s even a dedicated dance studio for those who prefer pirouettes to penalties.

Future plans include an all-weather sports facility, while partnerships with Royal Ascot Cricket Club and Phoenix Football Academy continue to strengthen opportunities for those with competitive ambitions. Whether your child dreams of county colours or simply wants to give football a go for the first time, there’s a reassuring sense that everyone is encouraged to get involved.

MUSIC & DRAMA

The theatre complex is enormous, and a super-active drama department makes this school an attractive proposition for jazz handers. There’s a 300-seat theatre and separate drama studio giving the girls the space to flex their creativity. The annual production involving Y8 to Upper Sixth (this year’s is The Phantom of the Opera) is a calendar highlight, as is the legendary Year 7 Christmas panto. Every single Year 7 gets involved, making it the ultimate icebreaker and a rite of passage for Georgians. The girls heap praise on the set designer and theatre technician who go above and beyond to bring the shows to life be it for pupil projects or school productions.

Music is a big deal at SGA, with more than 50% of girls taking weekly individual music lessons or singing in the choir. The state-of-the-art music technology room and recording studio – named after Director of Music, Ian Hiller who has been teaching at SGA for 40 years – is a cool addition to the existing 12 practice rooms, two performance spaces, four Grand pianos and more, while the newly refurbished Byrd Room has been cleverly redesigned to make rehearsals even more immersive. Music tech is another string to students who sing and play an instrument, it has much broader appeal.

SGA is well known for its choral music; The Chapel Choir (audition only) sing Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral each year, recently travelled to Salzburg and Vienna and even sang for the Queen. In the past, they have also sung at The Vatican in Rome. Yes, they’re that good. Even the most ferocious tiger mum can’t fail to be impressed by those stats and facts! Pretty much everyone gets involved in music in some way, from individual music lessons to open mic night and House Music. There are also orchestras, jazz bands, contemporary bands and enough opportunities to perform that stage fright doesn’t stand a chance. Even Head Hannah Fox has caught the bug, setting herself the challenge of learning the flute alongside her pupils. If that doesn’t sum up the school’s all-in approach, I don’t know what does.

SCHOOL

The cookery room looks like a scene from Masterchef with the culinary kit and space for gastro greatness. Since 2023, St George’s has introduced GCSE Food and Nutrition, plus in the lower years, girls have access to the facilities on a lesson carousel, so the girls learn professional cookery skills, appreciation of food, ingredients, trends and nutrition. With Michelin’s three-star role models, Clare Smyth and Hélène Darroze to inspire them, it is another feather in their facilities cap.

Technology is another area where the school excels. As a Google Reference School (a kite mark of excellence), digital learning is embedded thoughtfully rather than for the sake of it. Pupils use AI as a learning tool, but with clear boundaries, and the school’s approach has even been recognised nationally, having been a runner-up in an AI in Education Award. All pupils from Y7-Y11 and staff are given Chromebooks and Google apps are used for teaching, learning, admin and communication. It’s created a more efficient, creative and connected environment.

In terms of art, the department feels ambitious, varied and wonderfully hands-on. Pupils work across fine art, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculpture and printmaking, with artwork displayed throughout the school, turning corridors into an ever-changing exhibition. One of the proudest recent achievements came when a Lower Sixth pupil won the 2024 Royal Ascot Fashion Design Competition. Her design was produced by LK Bennett, worn at Royal Ascot and earned her work experience with the fashion brand, as well as £500 for the school’s Textiles department. What a win!

SGA is also talking the talk and walk when it comes to sustainability – edging ever closer towards a zero-carbon footprint. Solar panels, wildlife habitats, tree planting and efforts to reduce plastic use all form part of the school’s long-term environmental ambitions. It’s not shouted about but reflects the school’s wider philosophy of leaving things in a better state than they found them.

SIXTH FORM

Small really is beautiful here. Sixth Form classes are tiny (the girls I met talked about Economics with three students and even a one-person Geography A Level), meaning lessons often feel closer to private tutoring than traditional classrooms. Pupils can mix and match A Levels to suit their interests, with bespoke timetables built around individual subject choices. Alongside the classics such as Maths, English and the sciences, there are options including Politics, Psychology, Computer Science, Photography, Textiles and Drama, while every Sixth Former completes an EPQ, developing the research and independent study skills universities love.

The school puts just as much emphasis on what happens after A Levels. Its SGA Futures programme offers one-to-one careers guidance, university visits, mock interviews, personal statement support and specialist mentoring for competitive applications such as Oxbridge and Medicine, alongside degree apprenticeships. Careers lunches with alumnae and industry professionals, networking events and work experience all help bridge the gap between school and the real world. I also like that Sixth Formers still have timetabled PE, a rarity these days but a sensible reminder that wellbeing shouldn’t disappear the minute exam pressure ramps up.

The results speak for themselves. Twenty-three pupils in the most recent cohort secured places at Russell Group universities, four received offers from QS Top 10 universities and St George’s has produced at least one Oxbridge offer holder in each of the last seven years. Creative pathways are equally well supported too, with former pupils progressing to institutions including Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts and, increasingly, prestigious degree apprenticeships with employers such as EY. The message is clear: whether the destination is Russell Group, New York, art school or an apprenticeship, the route is tailored to the individual rather than the other way round.

ANYTHING ELSE?

St George’s is in the middle of its biggest transformation for more than a century. From September 2027, boys will begin joining Years 7 and 9, with the school becoming fully co-educational by 2029. It’s a bold move, but one that Head Hannah Fox talks about with refreshing honesty. There’s no pretending it isn’t a significant change, yet she is equally clear that the school’s close-knit culture is non-negotiable. The vision isn’t to reinvent St George’s, but to welcome boys into the warm, supportive community that’s already here. Speaking to the girls, it’s clearly been an adjustment, but one many are excited for.

The move comes as part of a partnership with St George’s School Windsor Castle and the St Albans Education Group, creating a through-school education from ages three to 18. For families, it opens up a seamless educational pathway, while also strengthening investment across both schools.

The changes don’t stop there. There’s a full curriculum review underway, plans for a new Futures Lounge dedicated to university and careers guidance, continued investment in sport (including a proposed all-weather sports facility), expanded transport routes and increasingly flexible boarding options designed to fit modern family life. Crucially though, none of it feels like change for change’s sake. Throughout my visit, the message was consistent: preserve everything families already love about St George’s, while making sure the school is fit for the next 150 years. That feels like a pretty sensible balancing act.

ACADEMICS

It’s hard to compare school to school sometimes, but of course, the proof is in the pudding. St George’s is academically selective but refreshingly free of hot-house vibes. Yes, the results are strong, with a 97% GCSE pass rate (62% of grades at 9 to 7) and a 100% A Level pass rate, with 43% achieving A to A*. But what the school is really proud of is its progress. St George’s ranks among the top 3% of schools nationally for GCSE value added, meaning pupils consistently achieve well above expectations, whatever their starting point. It’s a subtle but important distinction and one Head Hannah Fox talks about with genuine conviction.

Small class sizes help. Teachers clearly know their pupils inside out and lessons can move at exactly the right pace, whether stretching the high-flyers or giving someone a confidence boost before exams. The SGA Futures programme offers tailored careers guidance, university visits, mock interviews, mentoring and personal statement support, while every Sixth Former completes an EPQ. Recent leavers have headed to Bath, Bristol, Edinburgh, Exeter, UCL and other Russell Group universities, with four securing places at QS Top 10 institutions. Others have taken degree apprenticeships with employers including EY or crossed the Atlantic to study in the US.

It’s worth noting, you get a modern, progressive education. Traditional values, yes, but SGA is very much looking to the future. Directed by the Learning Innovation Lead, all teachers are trained to Level 1 Google Educator status and blend tech and traditional teaching in the classroom – so not at the expense of actual writing, obvs. I loved the sounds of the SGA Googlies – who work towards an SGA diploma and act as peer mentors, and there’s also Lower Sixth IT ambassadors helping to steer the school’s digital strategy. The school has also signed up for GCSE Pod, offering revision resources for the YouTube-podcast generation. Brilliant.

THE HEAD

There’s a new head at the helm and, whisper it, she’s a breath of fresh air. Hannah Fox arrived from Harrow School in September 2025, where she was Academic and Universities Director, bringing with her an Oxford Classics degree, three decades of teaching experience and one seriously impressive CV. Yet spend five minutes with her and it’s her personality, not her pedigree, that leaves the biggest impression.

She’s wonderfully direct. No management jargon, no glossy soundbites, no pretending every challenge has an easy solution. We spoke at length about the school’s move to co-education and the realities facing independent schools, and Hannah didn’t sugar-coat a thing. She’s frank, pragmatic and refreshingly honest, qualities that I suspect parents will value just as much as pupils. You get the feeling what you see is exactly what you get.

She also made a very deliberate move to St George’s because she wanted something smaller and more personal. Rather than leading from behind a desk, she’s determined to be a visible presence around the school, popping into lessons, chatting to girls between classes, watching matches and performances and getting to know every pupil by name. She even takes boarders for pizza and croquet at her onsite house and is training her (very cute) Dutch Stabyhoun, Hebe, to become a therapy dog.

What shines through most strongly is her genuine desire to inspire young women. Having been the first woman on Harrow’s senior management team, she’s passionate about helping girls develop confidence, resilience and ambition, without turning the school into an academic pressure cooker. She talks just as enthusiastically about kindness, creativity and community as she does about results. In a world where school heads can sometimes feel overly polished, Hannah Fox feels reassuringly authentic.

PASTORAL CARE

Pastoral care is where St George’s really comes into its own. In a school of just over 200 pupils, everyone genuinely knows everyone else, and that isn’t just a line for Open Day. Girls are supported by a network of tutors, housemistresses, heads of year, boarding staff, wellbeing specialists and senior leaders, meaning there are plenty of trusted adults to turn to should they need one. During my visit, the phrase “known as an individual” came up time and again, and, unusually, it actually rang true.

The girls themselves spoke about the benefits of being in a smaller school, describing teachers as approachable and saying the tiny class sizes mean it’s almost impossible to slip under the radar. Friendships naturally span year groups too, thanks to boarding, productions, music, sport and the buddy system that pairs new Year 7s with older pupils to help them settle in. One of the standout comments came from both student guides, who independently said attending an all-girls school had made them noticeably more confident in speaking up and putting themselves forward.

Girls earn their privileges through academic achievement, extra-curricular contributions and manners (no wonder the girls we met had phenomenal social skills). Doors are opened for you, chat is relaxed and charm is effortless. We also love the ambassadors awards scheme to encourage the girls to connect outside the St George’s bubble – touring prospective parents, participating in charity events, linking up with other schools or supporting others. There’s also the annual Big Help Out where every pupil participates in community volunteering, whether that’s assisting in care homes or helping out in the local church. It’s brilliant character-building.

QUIRKS

House competitions – like the aptly named team run, the Georgian Gallop – and some co-curricular activities encourage integration between the years. You get the sense here that the girls feel they have been given every opportunity, whether they are sporty, arty, theatrical or have grand plans in science, engineering or law. The girls are the biggest advocates for SGA – funny, bright, ambitious and honest. Rude kids are the worst, so it’s refreshing to find teenagers who talk to adults with such ease.

Famous alumni include Winston Churchill – no, Winston’s parents weren’t a bit bonkers. It was in fact a boys’ school up until 1904. Over the years, Princess Beatrice, TV sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher, and Isobel Waller-Bridge, the St George’s former head girl, may not be a household name but she wrote the music score for Sunday night period drama, Vanity Fair.

There be dragons! Not the teachers (rude), but this beautiful sculpture painted by the pupils. It was a project started to celebrate the centenary of the school and is now perched at the top of the hill, keeping a watchful eye on the girls as they arrive, leave and move between classes. Take a closer look and you’ll find all sorts of SGA references. The school houses are named with reference to the school’s history: Churchill, Alexander, Becket, and Darwin (an historical anomaly).

BOARDING

Around a quarter of St George’s pupils board, giving the school a lovely hybrid feel. It’s predominantly a day school these days, but boarding is still very much woven into the fabric of school life and, from what I saw, day girls benefit almost as much as boarders. Flexible is the operative word. Alongside full and weekly boarding, there’s flexi boarding, occasional overnight stays and the cleverly named SGA Stays programme, which includes Breakfast Club, Stay for Supper and wraparound care. From September 2026, every pupil in Years 11 to Sixth Form will even be entitled to one complimentary overnight stay each week, whether that’s to ease exam pressure, avoid a long commute or simply enjoy an evening with friends.

When it comes to boarding houses, in truth, most schools are the same – high street sofas and large TVs and games in the communal areas, plus oak veneer bunk beds in the rooms. But there are plenty of posters on the walls and cute personal touches to ensure the rooms feel homely. They feel warm, comfortable and lived in rather than show-home perfect.

There’s a busy programme of activities and residential trips to fill the days and terms, from theatre trips and Go Ape to pottery painting, baking, shopping and countryside walks. Even weekday evenings have their own rhythm, with themed nights, swimming, fitness sessions, games and wellbeing activities. It is worth noting, the girls are encouraged – strongly – to step back from over-focusing on pure academics to forge interests in sport, music, and anything co-curricular. It’s all about balance, and the teachers have made it clear here that girls have to offer more than brains and academic results to compete for places at university and in the workplace. With the trend towards anxiety in teens, that’s good to hear.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY

This will be music to many parents’ ears. Since 2024, pupils in Years 7 to 11 have spent the school day phone-free using Yondr pouches, meaning mobiles are locked away until the end of lessons. Hooray!

TRANSPORT

Ascot train station is less than a mile away, with direct trains to London Waterloo. To make school life more accessible, the school have even introduced a complimentary shuttle service from Ascot Station. St George’s attracts local, London and international girls – and they operate seven bus routes: a daily bus runs to and from Richmond and West London (stops include Hammersmith, Chiswick & South Kensington), plus a weekly London bus for boarders. Locally, girls are scooped up on routes to Eton, Windsor, Maidenhead, Beaconsfield and Virginia Water. They are also extending their private bus network to include Wokingham, Crowthorne and Finchampstead, making the school easier to reach from an even wider area. Heathrow Airport is just 11 miles down the road too.

FEES

The full boarding fee is £14,995 (incl. VAT) per term. Day fees are £11,675 (incl. VAT) per term. Overall, it’s on a par with local independent senior schools. Value for money? Hard to say, but the girls seem very happy, confident, ambitious for themselves, and there seems to be an absence of meanness and vanity. A result at this age.

WORD ON THE GROUND

Very happy parents at St George’s. The school is small (average class sizes only 12 – 16), but not so tiny that the girls don’t have room to grow. Word is the school is nurturing, not too claustrophobic and that the girls exude confidence and individuality. They are kept in the loop, feel part of the SGA community. Often Senior schools keep parents at arm’s length, but not here. A big tick. And if they want a window into their daughter’s world, scroll over to SGA’s Instagram and you can follow the fun.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: Anyone looking for an outstanding all-round school that manages to juggle academic ambition, progression and traditional values with a sense of fun. Tricky to pull off.

Not for: The interview process will weed out those who prefer a more laid-back school experience, but everyone I talked to, from the head to the pupils said that this is a school for kids who want to have-a-go.
