<p>Newsflash! After 2030, no new petrol or diesel cars will be sold in the UK, and as a result, Muddy is looking to the future. Seems like we&#8217;re not the only ones. Since launching in Great Britain in 2023, sales of BYD cars have <a href="https://fleetworld.co.uk/byd-is-now-uks-fastest-growing-car-brand-after-658-sales-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">risen</a> a staggering 658%, making it the UK&#8217;s fastest growing car brand. Unsurprisingly, the rate of expansion has been hugeeee with official dealers springing up here, there, and everywhere. In fact, a brand new BYD garage has literally opened in <a href="https://www.snows.co.uk/byd/contact-us/byd-newbury/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newbury</a> this past year.</p>



<p>Never heard of them? Let me fill you in. BYD (short for Build Your Dreams) is a Chinese manufactured brand, renowned for its cutting-edge electric vehicles (EVs) and battery technology. Not just fully electric motors though, they also sell plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and are often regarded as Tesla&#8217;s arch-rival. Oooh, the drama.</p>

<p>Say hello to the <a href="https://www.snows.co.uk/byd/new-vehicles/byd-atto-3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BYD Atto 3</a> &#8211; the brand&#8217;s best-selling model since its UK launch. It&#8217;s a fantastic front-wheel drive SUV family car that&#8217;s automatic and fully electric, with a fully charged range of 260 miles (although realistically expect around the 220 mark). Welcome to the tardis. It&#8217;s very roomy, even in the back, with five comfy seats, generous leg and head room, decent 440 litre boot, plus sliding panoramic sunroof which only adds to the sense of space. There are six settings to adjust your front seats into the perfect position, simultaneously heated and ventilated too. </p>



<p>The heated steering wheel is an absolute gamechanger on those frosty winter mornings, plus it also has multiple functions for easy access when eyes are on the road. The Alexa-like voice recognition is particularly cool &#8211; able to pick up whether you are the passenger or driver. So, for instance, if the passenger said, &#8220;hi BYD, I&#8217;m cold&#8221;, the car will auto adjust the temperature just on that side of the car. It&#8217;s also a super nifty way of controlling things like the sunroof, navigation, and heated seats.</p>

<p>I was obsessed with the size of the screen, literally like an oversized iPad at either 12.8 inches or 15.6 inches &#8211; particularly helpful when using the Sat Nav and it fully rotates to a portrait position too. When it comes to reversing and manoeuvring, you are given a 360-degree view and literally every perspective under the sun (including birds-eye). There&#8217;s even a transparent bonnet view which allows you to see under the car for any hidden objects or large rocks.</p>



<p>Apple CarPlay is seamless and super easy to connect for Spotify and other music streaming, taking hands-free calls, and using maps. There&#8217;s of course the integrated Sat Nav system which helped me get from A to Z just fine, plus smartphone wireless charging, and front and rear USB ports.</p>



<p>Carpool karaoke anyone? BYD has a variety of apps to download to make road trips just that <em>little</em> more exciting. Brace yourself. The car literally has a built-in karaoke system and app. Just to hammer it home, you can even buy compatible microphones that connect to the system and sync the interior lighting with your music. Move over Tay Tay. With the eight-speaker stereo, you&#8217;re basically performing at your own Eras Tour.</p>

<p>The design of the BYD Atto 3 itself is quirky, futuristic, and sporty. I did spend a solid five minutes figuring out how to get out the car, only to realise the circular speaker was my ticket to freedom (so long good old door handle). But overall, the vibes are cool. The exterior features metallic paint with four colour combos to choose from (surfing blue being the standard). Inside is comprised of vegan leather seats and upholstery, and you&#8217;ll have the option for blue and grey or full black.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-drive">THE DRIVE</h2>

<p>Smoooooth! Who needs a key in the ignition anyway? Just pop it down in the car, hit the button, and you&#8217;re off. If you&#8217;re not used to a big, techy car (puts hand up) making the leap can feel a little intimidating. I didn&#8217;t get that at all here. Everything was extremely easy to navigate, from the easy steering to very responsive brakes. There are three driving modes to choose from: normal, eco and sport which give a brilliant level of flexibility to your journey depending on driving conditions and personal preference. </p>



<p>Full disclaimer: I am the kind of driver with a serious need for speed. And the 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds&nbsp;delivered. I put the car through its paces on a variety of terrains, from dual carriageways to town centres and twisty one-track country lanes. It was a really fun drive, it held its own on the road and navigated sharp bends well. The BYD Atto 3 comes with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard which have a really slick design too.</p>

<p>When it did start to drizzle, the rain sensor got straight to work, and at night there&#8217;s auto LED headlights and a high beam assistant which makes life ridiculously easy. Then, when it comes to charging, all cars come with a charging cable to be used at home or at public stations. Using a rapid charger, the BYD Atto 3 can top up 20 &#8211; 80% in around 42 minutes.&nbsp;Meanwhile, overnight charging can take up to 9 hours and 45 minutes to reach full battery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-safety">SAFETY</h2>



<p>The safety technology is pretty impressive. Not only does the vehicle boast a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, but features like the Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning, and Blind Spot Detection all help make this a super robust option on the roads. Just that extra peace of mind can be everything, especially when travelling with young children in the car.</p>



<p>The high driving position means you have good all-around visibility (although the rear view is a little bit more restricted). Love it or loathe it, the car does make various warning sounds alerting you to different things like creeping over the speed limit or wandering out your lane. Useful for some but perhaps distracting for others.</p>

<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Electric first timers! BYD cars are affordable, high-spec, and perfect for those looking to dip their toes into the world of EVs. It&#8217;s a super easy, comfortable, and stress-free drive.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Petrol heads, look away! If you like a bit of vroom, vroom with your zoom you won&#8217;t get that here. It&#8217;s near silent. That being said, electric cars are the future (2030 is looming large), so now might be the time to take the leap.</p>
