<p>It&#8217;s the Oscars of the foodie world, but instead of Meryl Streep catwalking it up the red carpet, a legion of chefs took to Manchester&#8217;s famous Midland Hotel to see if they cut the Michelin star mustard. </p>



<p>This year, little changed with eight twinklers still shining bright in Berkshire. But new for this year, we were thrilled to see Adam Handling&#8217;s The Loch and The Tyne was awarded the prestigious Bib Gourmand award – an accolade that highlights restaurants offering great quality, great value cooking. Adam Smith&#8217;s Woven at Coworth Park retained its one Michelin star status (new for 2023), meanwhile in the big smoke it was an absolute sweep-fest with 15 new stars popping up in London. Now, let&#8217;s go star-gazing.</p>

<p>Heston’s flagship restaurant in Bray has held three stars since 2004 – with one year off in 2016 when it was closed for refurbishment. <p>The Roux family opened The Waterside Inn in 1972, bringing with them fine dining at the highest level to the shires. Sadly the OGs Albert and Michel passed away in 2020, but their legacy is huge. Michel&#8217;s son Alain has been running the show in Bray since 2002 and the restaurant has retained its three stars for 38 years. What is modestly described as a ‘restaurant with rooms’ on The Waterside website is in fact a gastronomic powerhouse. I <a href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/restaurants/waterside-inn-bray/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reviewed</a> it and the food was French, fancy and absolutely fabulous. It&#8217;s got old school charm in spades, the warmest of welcomes and one of the best locations in the county.</p>

<p>Executive chef <a aria-label="Executive chef Adam Smith (opens in a new tab)" href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/restaurants/coworth-park-review/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Adam Smith</a> showcases his gastronomic talents by taking classic British flavour combos and giving them a modern twist. Formal fine dining is what you&#8217;ll get here – plates of food dressed with ingredients elegantly draped on a plate with tweezers, crisp white table cloths, attentive service and a copper oak leaf halo hanging from the ceiling. Adam is an exceptional chef whose assured top-notch cooking adds oomph to premium British ingredients. Steep prices go with the territory, although the fixed-price menus are good value.</p>

<p>Heston&#8217;s laid-back little sister is <a href="https://berkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/hestons-hinds-head-bray/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Hind’s Head in Bray</a> – a gastropub with crowd-pleasing dishes done with foodie flair. Executive Chef Pete Gray and Head Chef Edoardo Brambilla flick through the history books to find unfashionable dishes and bring them back with pizzazz. The eclectic décor reflects its royal and religious past, especially in the Royal Lounge where cocktails and snacks are a must. Food at this level doesn&#8217;t come cheap, but it&#8217;s also not going to make your eyes bleed when you get the bill.</p>

<p>Another jewel in Berkshire’s foodie crown, Adam Handling expanded outside London to open The Loch &amp; The Tyne in Old Windsor. The gastropub has a no waste ethos, with everything sourced locally or, ideally, grown in the raised beds at the back of the building. The food and service is all wow. Michelin loved the re-worked, traditionally based dishes that represent good value, especially when considering its location. Try the beef featherblade, red wine, and smoked bacon or pumpkin ravioli, crispy sage, and garlic. For dessert, there’s a British cheese board, their signature trifle, or coconut and black sesame profiterole. Yum.</p>
