Damson Restaurant, Winterbourne

Green eating but make it fancy. Very fancy. Fine dining destination Damson Restaurant has only been firing up the coals for a few months now, but already they’ve made quite the splash. Exclusively serving up tasting menus, if you’re dipping your toes into the world of veggie or vegan eating, don’t miss their plant-based and vegetarian offerings. BBQ carrot, sea buckthorn, and tahini yoghurt (it’s their signature dish), ash beetroot with elderberry, burnt apple, and buckwheat, plus mushroom and black garlic risotto are all the menu. Delish. Oh, and the snack course is all made from excess food waste so it wears its eco badge loud and proud too.

Vegivores, Caversham

The vegan diet can give you wobbles, but if you fancy a go, try the mighty Vegivores in Caversham. Plant-based street food sellers – Kevin and Emma Farrell – opened their bricks and mortar Vegan restaurant in 2019 and the delicious dishes are even going down well with die hard meat eaters. The nourish bowl, Dal Masala and Tacos are a surefire hit. And with nothing on the menu over £17.50, it’s healthy on the wallet as well as the bod. Trigger warning! It’s right next door to the local butchers, so avert your eyes and feel the veggie love.

The Roseate, Reading

Experience fine dining finery over at The Roseate, Reading. Their vegan and vegetarian tasting menu is not only chefs kiss, but the perfect excuse to dip your toes into the world of eating green. There is heritage beetroot, potato ratatouille, and spiced pineapple on the seven course menu for £69. Add a cheeky flight of wine for £45. Winner, winner, no chicken dinner.

Salty Olive, Wokingham

New kid on the block Salty Olive over in Wokingham opened last year and serves beautifully authentic Spanish pinchos (snack sized bites) using fresher than fresh ingredients only. The menu changes daily with a wide selection of fresh, cold pinchos, as well as home-cooked hot dishes. Hot foot it to the veg menu for traditional patatas bravas, padron peppers, and deep fried brie and mango. For dessert, check out their scrummy selection of vegan ice cream.

Goat on the Roof, Newbury

Plenty of plant goodness to sink your teeth into. Muddy fave Goat on the Roof is a tapas restaurant with real flair and the small plates mean you can really give everything a go. Veggie dishes on offer include Crispy Potatoes, Marmite, and Truffle, Devon Parsnips, Honey, and Rosemary, plus White Lake Tor Goats cheese. Yummyyyyy. Head there for a lunchtime munch and get 3 tapas for a tenner.

Eliane, Hungerford and Sunningdale

Hitting World Vegan Month hard or just embracing a change, Eliane is your go-to place for a healthy, delicious brunch and lunch that caters for all. Yup veggies, vegans, raw foodists and allergy sufferers are all good here. With cafés in Sunningdale and Hungerford, soak up the glam and contemporary that would have Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP army salivating over the avocado on toast and lunch medleys.

Bombay Story, Wokingham

Serving good vibes, tasty cocktails and super duper tasty food, this Indian Street Food restaurant isn’t strictly vegan but they offer an entire vegan menu, plus more vegetarian options. No brainer dishes include vegan truffle infused seekh kebabs, courgette chana masala, and vegan chocolate brownie. It’s taste bud tingling stuff plus a ritzy setting to wash it all down.

Cliveden Dining Room, Taplow

Meat free can be fancy. The Cliveden Dining Room offers a vegan and vegetarian a la carte tasting menu. So sink your your bottom into a plush velvet chair and be seduced by some our favourite dishes Veganuary or not – the heritage beetroot salad with hazelnuts and chicory is lush as is the black olive risotto and grilled cauliflower steak. Yum.

The Sushi Maki, Newbury

Polish your health kick halo, The Sushi Maki is a much-loved Japanese restaurant in Newbury, serving, you guessed it, sushi. This funky little eatery on Market Place has a loyal following and they offer a vegan/vegetarian menu, as well as fish and meat. So dip your toe into plant-based waters or stick to Vegan eating and give your friends and family the option to eat what they want. The Hiayshi Roll (pictured) of iceberg, tomato, cucumber, avocado, rolled in hiyashi wakame seaweed is a tasty option.

L’Ortolan, Shinfield

Ooh la la. It’s French, it’s fancy and it’s Reading’s only Michelin starred restaurant. Try the vegetarian tasting menu – eight sensational courses for £105, courtesy of L’Ortolan’s talented Head Chef James Greatorex. It’s indulgent, fine dining that’s practically guilt free.

London Street Brasserie, Reading

A small but perfectly formed vegan menu at this award-winning riverside Reading restaurant. Owned by Chef Paul Clerehugh, London Street Brasserie gives all diners the chance to sink their teeth into something delicious. The sautéed wild mushrooms on sourdough toast and sweet potato bok choi rendang sound amaaaazing.

Fego, Ascot and Sunningdale

Influenced by South African hospitality and design, this buzzy mini café chain has two outposts in Berkshire, both of which offer a separate vegan menu to please your plant-based needs (it’s all pretty low cal too, if you’re going PB for health reasons). For breakfast, get your fix with a smashed avo or a Maca berry smoothie, and for lunch choose from superfood salads, teriyaki tofu wraps and meatless patty burgers with all the trimmings.

The Giggling Squid, Windsor and Wokingham

Starting life in a tiny fisherman’s cottage in Brighton back in 2002, Giggling Squid began with a simple idea: to cook ‘simple, rustic, fresh Thai food’ and now has outposts across the country, including two in our area. The restaurant has a special evening vegan menu which includes a selection of stir fries and curries (the Massaman is mouthwatering), plus a very reasonable set tapas lunch.
