January is wellness month and while we can’t go to the gym and drink protein smoothies with our friends, we can go on long solo walks with inspirational podcasts. Here’s Muddy’s pick.
Struggling with Dry January? Or were you doing all right until the schools closed? Yeah, me too. Anyway, this is an interesting prospect; The Dry Life Podcast is hosted by Kayla Lyons who set up the movement 1,000 Hours Dry during the first lockdown in 2020 to encourage people to go 42 days without alcohol. It’s not about becoming a nutty sober evangelist, it’s about changing your relationship with alcohol for the better.
For those of you who consider your dog the best listener in your life, this new podcast (launched in Dec 2020) is for you. Hosted by Mahny Djahanguiri, who is behind Doga (yoga with your dog – yep, really), with the help of various dog expert guests, she explores how owning and living with a dog can impact mental health.
This long-standing BBC R4 programme has segued effortlessly into a podcast that discusses pertinent issues – how to psychologically survive this winter, for instance – in a really informative and accessible way. Slightly more cerebral than your average wellness number but it is Radio 4, darling. We pay our license fee for this sort of quality.
The Slow Home host Brooke McAlary thinks we need to slow down and drop out – and she could be right. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the earn-more-then-consume-more mantra of the professional classes, the unspoken mum competition at the school gates, the constant unfavourable comparisons thrown in our face by social media, then this podcast will give you the permission and support to opt out of that nonsense and instead focus on life’s important bits.
Muddy has joined up with Schroders Personal Wealth to create a series of short podcasts that aim to give concise, sharp advice on how to manage your money. The first episode focuses on what financial ducks you need to get in line to take the plunge and live the single life. At only four minutes long, you can fit it in between homeschooling sessions and pouring your next gin.

She speaks to all manner of successful people about their habits, routines and rituals to discover how they get ahead – and how you can get ahead too.
You’d be forgiven for thinking this is a saccharine TV movie from the early Nineties. But it’s not. It’s actually a really fascinating and motivating podcast from Sas Petherick, a self-doubt researcher with a Masters in the subject, who uses both her academic insights and case studies to inspire and grow self-belief. Perfect fodder for those of us who are doubting our next move.
Award-winning journalist Tim Samuels hosts this 18-part podcast on the BBC and sells it as no-nonsense wellness. So expect episodes that discuss whether exercise is madness or if raising a baby vegan is ethical. There’s even an episode talking about fat vs sugar, named The Sweet Rise and Fall of Tony the Tiger, which had me at the 1980s pop culture reference.
