Headmasters, Windsor

Belay-Hell! A spinky-spanky new hair salon offering a bespoke do, unique to you.

I go through phases in my life when I want to do something semi-radical with my hair. The pixie crop, peroxide blonde phase was a low point. I actually looked like Bart Simpson with boobs. You’d think this would keep me firmly in the safe zone. By and large I stick to what I know – long bob, patch up the grey with a few highlights. By asking for the same thing again and again, it’s get bit dull.

Last month, I went for a cut and colour at Headmasters in Windsor, a spinky spanky new salon in the heart of the busy shopping centre, Headmasters Windsor is a short 5 minute walk from Windsor and Eton Central station and situated around 2 minutes from King Edward Court car park. Despite being a chain with the ‘Headmasters look’, the salon has history and personality… as do the team.

Inside, it’s modern monochrome with a hint of history. But the building has it all going on as it was once used to iron the Queen’s papers. I love that. In the shadow of Windsor Castle, the salon has a legitimate Royal connection. It can only be a matter of time before Her Maj pops in for a quick blow dry when her stylist is on their holibobs.

Michael Tough, who is cutting and colouring my hair today, is the co-owner of the Windsor salon. He’s worked for Headmasters for, well, forever. He started as an apprentice, worked his way up through the ranks and is now a fromage. There’s a heavy emphasis on customer experience and wanting to ensure that you walk out feeling your hair flicking best – whether you’re into something edgy or classic. Thankfully it’s all done without fuss or pretension. There are no bells and whistles of hand massages and added on beauty treatments here, but I’ll take a decent coffee and a good cut and colour over that any time.

Now, I appreciate I look like Ronald McDonald, but the consultation process is very thorough and involves a bit of science to boot. You undergo a full colour consultation. Remember Colour Me Beautiful from the 80s? This is the hair version. Same principles apply. Your skin tone and eye colour will determine what hair colour will suit, add in a bit of face shape analysis too and, voila, the perfect tone for you will be revealed. Clever? Michael informs me I need contrast. I’m all about light and shade. He’s darkening the base using a permanent tint, covering 100% of white hair using eyes that are Ammonia free, so it’s kind to your hair and scalp. As someone with a sensitive to scalp this is the ultimate luxury.

The next step? Applying caramel blonde balayage. This is a totally bespoke highlighting technique that is painted on, freehand, to ensure the highlights flatter and highlight your best features – making the most of your cut.

Sizzle, snip and style…

As for the cut? Well, science (and Michael) recommend me going a bit shorter with my LOB. So that’s what is exactly what happend. As a final flourish, here is the final version (below), once I’d had a play with my bonce at home. I’m not one of these people who can step out of the salon and suddenly flick my hair in slo-mo from side to side as I get on with my day. I faff. I play. I scrunch. I trowel on the make-up, this was the result. Excuse random antler, I was taking a quick snap before flying out the door to a ‘Riverside Chic’ party, but I loved my new hair. Warm, a littler lighter and perfect for summer.

Based on my experience of trying out so many salons in Berkshire, I’d say prices at Headmasters Windsor are OK for a pro regional salon – cuts start at £53, and even with the salon director wielding the scissors for £75. Highlights start at £75, and tints from £42.

Other bonus points, the salon is open seven days a week from 9am – 9pm, Monday to Friday and 9am-6pm at the weekends. So there’s no excuse for a bad hair day. Pop along on a Sunday or Monday and enjoy a Me-Day Makeover – you get a cut, style and highlights using foils, tissues or balayage from £95. Definitely one to put on your ‘must-try’ list if you’re having a ‘new me, new salon’ moment.
