Live near Wokingham? Order Supper!
Have you heard of Supper? If you live in or around Wokingham you’re going to be praising me to the skies for this little nugget of info. It’s a brilliant healthy home-cooked food delivery service that delivers food to your kitchen table, woop! woop!
Perfect if you’re short on time but still want to eat nutritious, home-cooked food because unlike the traditional restaurant takeaway, Supper meals are all nutritionally balanced and cooked in the chefs’ very own kitchens.
Every morning a network of professional and amateur chefs and cooks say what they’re cooking and what times their meals are available from (all via the Supper app). You then place your order from midday and choose a time slot for your food to arrive. A driver will pick up your meal and deliver it straight to your door (or even your sofa if you’re feeling lazy), hot and ready to eat.
The Supper chefs all cook their own recipes from their own premises (whether that be a commercial kitchen or their own home) so they’re not limited to the type of cuisine they cook and as their recipes rotate throughout the week there’s always something new to try.
It also makes sense that if they’re cooking their signature dishes and cooking what they love, the food is bound to taste better than your bog standard takeaway. And if you’re concerned about hygiene all the chefs have a Level 2 in food hygiene or more, and are registered with the local borough council.
I don’t live near Wokingham, but I managed to convince the Supper team to meet me at a car park closer to Muddy HQ in order for me to try the service on your behalf, and they said yes! Such is the power of Muddy dear readers (and amazing how convincing I am when it comes to food). Which is how I came to meet up with Nick at the Waitrose car park in Twyford where he handed over the brown paper bag with the goods. I felt like I was in an episode of The Wire.
After much deliberation I’d chosen a meal by the home cook, Mustang Kitchen, who describes her repertoire as: ‘Best of British, hearty stews and casseroles, Italian and vegetarian.’ Out of 186 reviews the majority have been top marks of 5 stars for her cooking. It was a wet and windy day and I really fancied some comfort food, so I went for Luxurious Cottage Pie, 2 portions including delivery £19.50. Her Pesto Spring Chicken and Sausage and Mixed Bean Hot Pot also rated highly so they’re on my hit list for next time.
I whizzed home and voila, here is exactly how it came out of the boxes… I’ve not used any fancy filters as I wanted you to have an honest-to-goodness shot of how the meals look. And I think you’ll agree, it’s a pretty tasty looking home-cooked meal – and a welcome sight if you’re feeling frazzled and your cupboards are as bare as Mother Hubbard’s. I was particularly impressed with the al dente veggies still looking bright and perky even after their slightly arduous journey.
Portions were generous and the cottage pie was absolutely delicious with that lovely flavour only home cooking can bring. The beef mince had freshly grated horseradish, English mustard and a dash of unami paste to give it a kick, and the topping was a combination of potato and sweet potato. Veggies were plentiful and perfectly cooked. I was impressed and based on our meal, would definitely like to try more dishes.
I really liked the look of the Asian-influenced dishes of the Malaysian Mak cook too – spicy chicken stir fry, Mee Goreng (Malaysian fried noodles), Thai basil and pork stir fry and honey grilled chicken wings. Yumster.
And don’t worry if you’re on a health drive after an over-indulgent summer (aren’t we all? *sucks in holiday tummy*) Supper’s Harley Street nutritionist, Rhiannon Lambert of Rhitrition, ensures all the dishes meet nutritional guidelines. They have to be less than 825 calories, low fat, low salt and low sugar. There are also low calorie dishes with less than 550 calories.
Hankies at the ready if you’re not in the Wokingham area as Supper is only available thereabouts for now. But it’s one of those concepts that will no doubt roll out like a red carpet further around the county in due course, so as and when Supper gets out to other Muddy towns and cities you’ll be the first to know. In the meantime if you live in Wokingham and you fancy a meal cooked from scratch, with totally fresh ingredients that tastes just like your mum made, then give them a whirl!
Download the free app now, you can then browse via postcode to see which chefs and dishes are available near you. If you do try them I’d love to hear what you think. Bon appetit!
