Chop! Chop! Muddy tries a fab salon – Indigo Rye, Caversham

I’ve spent a bit of time behind the scenes on Muddy recently checking out local salons, as I figured like me, you might be coming to the end of a frazzled summer with equally frazzled hair and looking for a chop and a change before school starts so you can swing up at the school gates in September looking fab-u-LOUS!

Obviously, I’ll only feature the ones I really think are of interest or value to readers, and given that I find a visit to the hair salon about as stressful as a root canal, I am very very choosy. So it is with a handclap of glee that I can totally ‘tried and tested’ recommend Indigo Rye in Caversham.

It’s a small, elegant salon on Church Road (over the crossroads going up the hill) just next door to Griggs & Mackay (well worth a nip in there if you’re early for your appointment!) with large double-fronted windows that bathe the modern interior with light. Worth mentioning that you can park in Waitrose for 3 hours free of charge (about a 5 minute walk away) and the pub right opposite the salon has started offering parking for £1.

Salon owner Karen Kennedy also has a branch in Wallingford, and I believe Ms Muddy Bucks & Oxon is whizzing over to review that one soon, so if that’s closer to your neck of the woods keep your eye on her blog too.

I was warmly welcomed by Lily on reception who swept me through to meet my stylist Zoë, one of the directors (not in the business sense, but in the cutting sense!) who has worked at the salon for 10 years. The salon itself has been open for a staggering 18 years – pretty darn amazing I’d say in an age when our indie businesses are closing at a terrifying rate.

Zoë was absolutely lovely and made me feel very relaxed. In fact, all the staff were excellent as far as I could hear from eavesdropping on a few haircuts going on around me. I could tell there were a lot of regulars in the salon, it was busy and buzzing with lots of happy banter. I didn’t feel in the slightest bit intimidated (which I often do in smart salons) and genuinely relaxed and enjoyed the whole experience.

Chop chop… dry dry…

My hair is cut into a bob and naturally wavy, but it had grown out of its style and was looking more shagpile than sleek urban chic, so I asked Zoë to get my bob back into shape and blow dry it poker straight. She did a fab job, and gave me a really smart precision bob. To tame the muddy tresses and achieve uber sleekness Zoé used  Kevin Murphy Un.Tangled Leave-In Conditioner and Wella SP Luxe Oil.

Tah DAAAAH! Presenting… the back of my head!

I got the sense of some serious talent at this salon with cutting and colour both given equal weighting. I asked about the latest trends and ombré (the dip dye thing) isn’t showing any signs of disappearing or even slowing down.

Two of the girls who worked in the salon were a good advert for the trend for more exciting colours coming in such as the unlikely hair trend of the season, silver grey (who knew?!) modelled here by the lovely Briony; and Becky (too shy to be photographed!) had gone for red and blue ombré á la Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad. Not sure if I’m quite brave enough for that yet, maybe next time.

Prices are reasonable I’d say – £55 for a cut and blow dry with a director (a graduate stylist is £37; stylist £46; senior stylist £50) and a semi-permanent colour starts from £41. They do the whole gamut of hair, from up dos to perming, straightening and highlights and seem very hot on all the latest trends and gadgetry (including those cool hair driers that look like a space ship orbiting your head!).

Indigo Rye is a pleasing mix of rural approachability and urban credibility. I loved my cut, and the friendly relaxed atmosphere of the salon, and would go back again in a flash. Since my visit I’ve discovered it’s the go-to-salon of choice for a friend of mine who said gravely, ‘I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair.’ – can’t get a better recommendation than that.

Very pleased to see this place reviewed on your blog – it really is an excellent salon and I’m plucking up the courage to have the ombre (great photos too, btw)

Thanks Helen, I really rate them, and I’ll get the ombré done if you do! Though not sure if I’ll go for red and blue! Sx
