The Good Nurse, Netflix, Weds 26 Oct

Two international stars, one TV explosion. Glorious Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game, The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and everyone’s favourite other wizard Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts) are the leads in this dark film based on real events in America, when Charles Cullen, a former nurse, was convicted in 2006 for murdering 29 patients with rogue injections while he worked at New Jersey and Pennsylvania hospitals. Chastain plays Amy, a shattered nurse working on a demanding intensive care unit, and Redmayne is the unusually helpful and empathetic new recruit, Charlie. They bond over gruelling night shifts and intense workloads, but when a series of patients mysteriously die, Amy begins to suspect the worst. Creepy, well-acted and frighteningly true.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, Netflix, Tues 25 Oct

The phantasmagoric mind of Guillermo del Toro, the man behind the Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water strikes again with this new Netflix horror anthology. Each of the eight episodes tells a different story within the walls of a new world. I can’t tell you much more than than that as I was so scared I could barely make it through the trailer (sue me, I don’t do horror). Check out the promo, and don’t blame me if you have nightmares ’til Christmas.

Louis Theroux Interviews, BBC 2, Tues 25 Oct

A brand new series from middle England’s secret crush (hands off, he’s mine). Louis Theroux has compiled a formidable guest list to cajole and charm, kicking off the series with an intimate discussion with British rapper Stormzy who talks about his life, love and music. Other guests in the series include Dame Judi Dench, comedian Katherine Ryan and adventurer Bear Grylls.

The Devil’s Hour, Prime Video, Fri 28 Oct

A six-part psychological thriller with a stellar central performances from Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, The Devil’s Hour is your creepy TV date for Friday. It centres on Lucy, a single mother to a creepy, otherworldly child, who wakes up every night at exactly 3.33am, halfway through the so-called Devil’s Hour. Elsewhere there’s a stream of brutal murders (hello Capaldi) and altogether this first episode creates a chilling start to the weekend.

Louis Armstrong’s Black and Blues, Apple TV+, Fri 28 Oct

Apple TV+ brings you never before seen footage and personal recordings of jazz singer and musician Louis Armstrong in this eye opening account of his civil rights activism. Toe tapping and tender all at the same time, you certainly don’t need to be up on your jazz to enjoy this.

The Handmaid’s Tale, Channel 4, Sunday 23 Oct

OKm the first episode ran on Sunday but you can catch up this week. Elizabeth Moss returns as the feisty June Osbourne in the penultimate series of the dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale. She’s still fighting the war on women’s reproductive rights, searching for her daughter and trying to stop Gilead’s influence spreading throughout Canada. You’re still going to absolutely love it. The best series yet by all accounts, but hey – you be the judge of that.
