The Globe reopens
Hurrah! The Globe in Newbury has finally reopened! Welcome back, guys. Landlords Craig and Katie have had a really tough time. Forced to close during lockdown, couldn’t reopen because their old pub was too long and narrow for customers to be socially distant and then fight with the local council to open ‘The Globe Garden’ in an empty shop next door. Well, it has finally all come together – and the indoor beer garden is looking seriously cool. Expect faux grass, picnic tables, graffiti art and a relieved room of staff and customers. Go and visit and show some love.
New pub alert
There’s nothing we love more than a new pub opening, especially in the current climate, so please give a warm welcome to The Hartley Arms in Donnington. Previously known as The Three Horseshoes, it was taken over by Romilla Arber, owner of the Honesty Group, earlier this year and given a delicious makeover. There’s fun artwork, dark brooding walls and lots of wood textures throughout. I popped along to the press event and can confirm the food is very very good and great value (3 courses £30) for the quality. Open Wednesday to Sunday, it will offer pub cliassic and an ever changing, seasonal set menu. It’s a great pitstop after a stomp around Donnington Castle.
New neighbours for the Middletons?
Blink, and it was sold! Deer safari park Bucklebury Farm Park went on the market this week for £1.5m and it looks like it has immediately snapped up. So new neighbours for Ma and Pa Middleton who live opposite in their Grade II listed Georgian mansion. But who? I’ll keep my ear to ground, but a non disclosure agreement has been signed.
Owner Rupert Hartley-Russell put the 72-acre site on the market after 30 years. The site is unrecognisable from its humble beginnings as a PYO strawberry field to the award-winning visitor attraction with glamping tents that it is today.
The Christmas shows must go on…
A little theatrical round up for all you culture vultures. We’re thrilled to hear, The Mill at Sonning theatre will reopen on 31 Oct thanks to generous donations from Amal and George Clooney and other friends of this unique theatre.
The Corn Exchange have rubbed their magic lamp and were granted one wish – for Christmas panto not to be cancelled. The genie granted the wish but on condition that the make him star of the show. So yes, folks, book up for Aladdin for a welcome dollop of cheesy panto patter.
Elsewhere, The Watermill Theatre in Newbury is putting on Dickens classic A Christmas Carol; if you’re desperately seeking your Prince Charming, head to the Theatre Royal Windsor for Cinderella and Norden Farm Maidenhead is running a trio of shows Including Oldilocks and the Three Bears and Pinocchio
And finally… Congrats to Holly Doyle
Last year I interviewed badass jockey Holly Doyle. She told me about her gruelling work schedule, the concussions, lost teeth, early starts and late nights. But she wouldn’t have it any other way. Well, she’s having the racing season of her life. At just 23, she recently became the first woman to win ride five winners at a race meeting – at Windsor Racecourse, not less. Last year she rode 116 winners, breaking the record for a female rider in Britain. The icing on the cake? Her long term boyfriend Tom proposed and Holly said yes!
