My weekly round-up of who's open for business and how you can help - let me know if I've missed off anyone!
It’s Tuesday, which means it’s shout-out time for the brilliant Berkshire indies that are open for business or doing something new to tackle lockdown. Pleasy please share this feature, and let’s get the word out as far and wide as possible.
Right, here goes:
Powering through your book pile. The Little Book Shop in Cookham can order the literature you’re after. They can order books from its supplier but it is a limited service (one copy of one title to one household) and it has to be something they have in stock. If the book you want is in the shop, local delivery is also available. Simply email read@thelittlebookshop.
Also delivering is Wokingham based Jewellery by Rococo – the online store sells a range of stunning gold and sterling silver pieces, designed by Alex Monroe, Thomas Sabo, Missoma and many more, perfect if you have a birthday coming up or need a blingy pick me up.
Want to make good use of your time at home? Newbury-based language academy, VICI, is offering virtual classes for kids and adults. Learn French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Polish, Mandarin, Japanese, Russian or English as a foreign language. The introductory package for kids is £37 and for adults £67. Muddy favourite The Wellington Farm Shop is still open and offering its quality produce via click and collect service. They have created a variety of boxes – meat, fruit and veg, salad, cheese, kitchen essentials, ready meals, brunch, BBQ – to make it super easy for you to place an order online. You are given a collection time, so you can safely pick up your goods.
If you’re in the West Berkshire ‘hood, don’t miss caterer Jo Teague of The Merry Kitchen‘s weekly takeaway menu. The Curry Club and Eat In menus are posted at the beginning of the week, order by 6pm on Wednesdays and your food is ready to collect or deliver on Friday to reheat at home. We’ve ordered and the food is amaaaaazing.
Chef Dominic Chapman at The Beehive at White Waltham, is offering take-home meals and food parcels. The Beehive @ Home menu can be found online. Order between 9am-4pm by calling 01628 822877 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Safe Collection of all ready-made meals and groceries will be confirmed while ordering.
Over in Newbury, caterer Penelope’s Bites is offering a Greek Dine In Menu. Order via Instagram and your feast will be ready to collect or be delivered by Tuesday 21 April.
Garden never looked tidier? Hell yes, but with many garden centres closed, you may be lacking plants. Oaktree Garden Centre in Warfield is isolation gardening packages to get borders and pots looking pretty in lockdown. They are delivering as far as High Wycombe, Guildford, Reading, Windsor, and beyond. Local delivery costs £10, however, free delivery is available if you spend over £100.
A Muddy reader has been super impressed with Orwell’s Restuarant in Binfield Heath – now a community shop amazing food offering. Order online and treat yourself to great food and support a local business (that’s still paying all if it’s staff their full wages).
Berkshire Maestros – the county’s music service – is now offering individual musical instrument lessons via Zoom. Suitable for all ages from total beginners to seasoned pros, it gives you the chance to interact with other humans, get your groove on and learn a new skill. They can even deliver instruments to your home.
Cheese incoming! Cheese Etc, in Pangbourne is delivering its delicious range of cheeses (along with other household staples). The list of available cheeses can be found on the deli’s website. Free local delivery available.
The infamous Sunday night quiz at The Globe in Newbury is still running online. A great way to have a laugh at home or compete against your pals. Simply play along live on their Facebook page. If you’re local they also open a tuck shop offering takeaway drinkies and snacks. Bring on the Space Invaders and Scampi Fries.

I think we can all agree that our brilliant healthcare workers need a bloody good holiday once this is all over – which is the idea behind Operation Recuperation. The initiative is asking people to donate future stays in holiday homes, second homes, hotels and B&Bs to give frontline workers some much needed R&R. More info here.
