The weird world of Craig David
What do Kestrel Kes, Louboutins and Willy Wonka have in common? Here are 10 things you didn't know about comeback king, Craig.
R&B hottie Craig David met us on Monday and we were swinging from the chandeliers from Wednesday to Sunday, but after 7 Days (and a relentless Bo’ Selecta banter), the bearded one scarpered to Miami – Kestrel Kes and Leigh Francis have a lot to answer for. Nearly 20 years later, he staged the greatest musical comeback of all time, snagging his first No1 in 18 years. Back from musical extinction, Craig sounds and looks better than ever (yes, we’re that shallow). He’s about to play Newbury Racecourse’s legendary Party In the Paddock, so here’s 10 things you didn’t know about our Craig…
1/ He’s Southampton’s greatest musical export. Craig Ashley David was born on May 5, 1981. Yes, he’s even more successful than 80s warbler Howard Jones. A whopping 15 million solo record sales, don’t lie.
2/ Poor old Craig, Bo Selecta’s caricature of him as an incontinent Northerner with a pet kestrel, saw the star go from hot to not in the blink of an eye. So we can be forgiven for forgetting his impressive record of scoring hits. Craig became the youngest ever male artist to score a No1 when he released his debut Fill Me In in 2000. Since then, he has scored 14 more Top 10 hits, released two multi-platinum albums. A record not to be sniffed at.
3/ Always the bridesmaid never the bride, “Six nominations, no Brits for CD” was David’s infamous line at the 2001 Brit Awards, where he was snubbed six – yes six! – times. Despite being one of the biggest-selling acts of the noughties, Craig has still never won a Brit (or a Grammy for that matter). With 13 nominations in total, he can count himself pretty unlucky to have never done so. Ms Dynamite and Lemar are among the acts to have burst Craig’s bubble. One less thing to dust, though, right?
4/ A self-confessed trainer addict, Craig loves nothing more than a massive sniff of some fresh sneakers. “That box fresh smell is incredible,” he claims. “I put them in a special cupboard in my dressing room. I’m excessive but never too excessive. There’s four or five [pairs] of the same trainer – maybe that is excessive.” Craig’s home even has a dedicated walk-in wardrobe for his collection. Shoe goals right there.
5/ What was he doing during the wilderness years? Apart from driving fast cars and dating hot women, Craig converted his living room into a nightclub so he could DJ for his mates.. The small gathering, was named TS5 (named after his bachelor pad is in Tower Suite 5 of Miami’s Mondrian Hotel). His parties are legendary, attracting stars such as rapper Lil Wayne and model Kate Upton and became so popular he was invited to appear at festivals across the world – hitting Ibiza and Glastonbury in 2017.
6/ Who are Craig’s man crushes? He has impeccable taste… Brad Pitt and David Beckham, natch. “They’re hot, you can’t deny it,” he admits. “Every guy in the world thinks so.”
7/ He’s a gym bunny. As a child, Craig was actually quite overweight and suffered from bullying. One day, he decided enough was enough, and started training at the gym, sometimes for three hours a day. “Some people become addicted to drugs, alcohol or smoking. For me it was the gym.” Your efforts are very much appreciated in the Muddy office, Craig. Time to pass that addiction onto us.
8/ Give Craig David a football to kick around with and he can compete with the best of them. The popstar took the ‘Man Of The Match’ title at the 2008 Soccer Aid game, which featured major international footballers such as Alan Shearer, Paolo Di Canio, Teddy Sheringham and David Seaman.
9/ He absolutely loves chocolate. He can’t get enough of it. His favourite film is in fact Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and his track Born To Do It gets its title from a quote from the 1971 film, starring Gene Wilder.
10/ More chocolate facts? If you visit his Miami pad, he’ll offer you Lindt choice from a pair of white Christian Louboutins perched on the coffee table or you’ll be presented with a box of Ferrero Rocher. Ah, the R&B ambassador he is spoiling us… Just give us the nod, Craig, and we’ll happily party with you in Miami *checks flights*
