Vicar’s Game, Ashampstead

This award-winning farm shop is a food lover's paradise. Expect top notch meat butchery, local produce, great service, seasonality and a cute countryside coffee shop.

Weekend Escapes

Ditch the chaos and clashing supermarket trolleys for award-winning farm shop Vicar’s Game (aka Casey Fields Farm Shop) in Ashampstead for super-fresh produce and #supportlocal creds.

Vicar’s supply some the top gastropubs and restaurants in Berkshire and beyond, so you know it’s good if picky chefs love the produce they supply. It has long had a first class reputation for quality meat – the sausages and ribs are a favourite with my kids.

But there’s also a superb deli counter with a great selection of pies, hams and British cheeses. Fresh fish comes in from the West Country, there’s bread, Beechwood Eggs, fancy biscuits, chutneys and locally produced drinkies. You can even stock up on the very local Berkshire Botanical gin. No need to rush, there’s a coffee shop on site too. So take your time, have a cuppa, before picking up something delicious for dinner.

Big shout out to the staff. They are helpful and really know their stuff. So if in doubt ask – especially on the butcher’s counter. Christmas orders are being taken online, so don’t panic about turkeys. These guys had you back long before there was any mention of shortages, sourcing locally from Walters Turkeys in West Berkshire and Peach Croft in Oxfordshire.  If you are looking to have something other than Turkey, then they suggest you pick up your joint now and freeze it as beef and hams are likely to be in short supply.

Now owned by Yattendon Estate – one of the largest Christmas tree growers in the UK – you can complete your shop local circle by popping down to the tree barn in Yattendon to pick up your Spruce (other trees are available). Again, great staff, lots of decorations, hot drinks and mulled wine.
