Top Treats, Newbury
Muddy says: Life is sweet now this brilliant dessert bar has popped up in Newbury. Good luck extracting your drooling children from within.
Would you rather skip your starter and main and head straight for dessert? Ooh you naughty lot, not that kind of dessert. Top Treats is a cafe with a difference. You’ll find nothing savoury here because life is sweet at this brilliant Newbury dessert bar.
Top Treats is on Bartholomew Street – an area fast becoming a buzzy part of the town for cool independent businesses. Owner Sara has created a menu that kids’ dream of: pancakes, waffles, mug cakes, milkshakes – and their famous freakshakes. Not for the fainthearted, these milkshakes look like their dressed for Royal Ascot. There is quite the party going on on top, as they’re piled high with cream, biscuits, a slice of cheesecake (yes that’s right, a whole slice) or a brownie. If you have a sweet tooth this is paradise.
Trying to watch the calories? There are plenty of items on the menu that won’t give Willy Wonka toothache, so it really is a fab place for well, a top treat. Plus they offer gluten and dairy free options. I’ve popped in with my kids a couple of time. Yes, I tried to keep it healthy-ish, ordering waffles with fruit and chocolate sauce – foregoing the ice cream (*polishes halo), while my boys hit the pancakes pretty hard with banana, Nutella and ice cream.
Parents looking for an alternative to soft play and an entertainer, Top Treats also do kids’ parties. Older kids will get to make their own freakshakes, while the littlies can decorate – add pizza and games. Happy kids, grateful parents.
