Hare & Hounds, near Newbury

This elegantly eccentric Georgian Inn near Newbury offers a farm-to-table menu that showcases the very best local producers and 30 stylish rooms, so you can scoff, quaff and stagger to bed.

Weekend Escapes

There’s nothing we love more on Muddy than a country pub that understood the assignment. The Hare & Hounds has recently undergone a stunning restoration – retaining its period charm, but with eccentric and witty design details. You’ll find this Georgian Inn in the village of Speen, just a smidge outside Newbury.

Why all the buzz? After months of hard work this stunning 17th Century pub has been given style CPR. Taking its inspiration from its surroundings, there’s a nod to the equestrian world – Newbury Racecourse is down the road (the Queen’s favourite day out) and it’s an area with more than its fair share of racing yards. But it’s also got a Hunting Lodge vibe with crystal decanter chandeliers, copper free standing baths, deer antlers, with warm wood everywhere.

Championing local producers, the elegantly eccentric interior is matched with a farm-to-table seasonal menu. Expect elevated British classics like grilled ribeye, venison cottage pie and Coronation chicken burger. Plus a sassy selection of cocktails, fine wines and craft beers. Though glossy, the vibe is relaxed: deep comfy sofas and barstools.

The 30 individually designed bedrooms are spread across four buildings – The Stables, The Paddocks, The Hunter’s Lodge and The Coach House. If you like a bath make sure you book a suite so you can soak in a luxe copper freestanding bath. Families will love the interconnecting rooms and there are dog friendly rooms too, where your furry BFF will be treated to bed, bowl and ‘Bramley Dog Box’.

We think you’ll love the location too. A little bit of town and country. It’s just one mile from Newbury town centre and minutes from rural splendour. The A34 and M4 are all within easy reach, so whether you’re looking for a new pubby hot spot, or looking for a place to stay for a weekend escape, business or staycay, Hare & Hounds ticks a lot of boxes.
