THE LOWDOWN

CLIP N CLIMB READING BERKSHIRE CLIMBING CENTRE

Fresh out of the box and ready to save to your sanity this summer. If you’re sick of your kids practising parkour around the house, head to Clip N Climb Reading. It might just save your mind and your furniture.

CLIP N CLIMB READING CLIMBING CENTRE

It’s fun climbing centre for kids and adults alike with 24 activities to test your strength, endurance, balance and nerves, plus a 7m drop slide. It’s also super easy to find, just off J11 of the M4 in Arborfield so ideal for anyone in Berkshire – just 10 minutes from Wokingham and 20 minutes outside Reading town centre.

THE VIBE

CLIP N CLIMB READING CLIMBING CENTRE

Ready to play? It’s a gamers delight: bright, bold, creative and will even lure screen obsessed teens to put down their phones and join in, although don’t be surprised if it’s just to up the like count on their Tik Tok account. Unlike other climbing centres that can be grown up and a bit intimidating for beginners, this place is all about having fun, challenging yourself and building confidence. So even if you’re not a natural and squealing at the idea of any of the walls and activities (just me?), no one bats an eyelid. There’s just a load of respect that you’re giving it a go. For mountain goats (like my eight year old) it’s simply the coolest playground to let loose in for 90 minutes.

THE CLIMBING

As you would expect there’s a heavy emphasis on staying safe. The safety briefing is simple and easy for all ages to take on board and harnesses are double checked or put on by the team. Then you’re good to go. You clip into each activity, a mat drops on the floor which tells everyone in the arena that someone is climbing, so don’t walk across it. Then up you go.

The staff are on hand to guide you to the easiest walls to get you get going. Or if you have a fearless nutter in your family (*raises hand) then they’ll just go wild. There are timed speed climbs for you to get competitive and the heartstopping Stairway To Heaven walks you up a series of tall green posts that scale up to the barn roof. *Gulp*.

I also loved the disco lights on one wall, the PacMan styling on another and Sam’s favourite was the DNA stack in the centre. There are ladders to cruise up, nets, a fiendishly hard corner climb with blobby holds and challenges to complete as you improve.

7m drop slide

The 7m slide drop is an extra £2.50. You have to wear a pretty unflattering boilersuit that are not made for women’s bodies (just saying(, so don’t expect to look like good in them and then you have to hold on for dear life. It’s a good laugh, but personally I’m not sure it’s worth the extra money. That said, my son loved it, so I’ll leave it for him to do next time.

In fact, he loved the whole thing. It’s totally his jam – no fear fun where he can climb, run and challenge himself on repeat. He’s champing at the bit to go back and as they do birthday parties, I know exactly where we’ll be coming. There are plenty of tables and chair to watch the action and the café serves crowd-pleasing pizzas, sarnies and snacks. plus ice cream and slushies. So you can make a morning, afternoon or evening of it.

CLIP N CLIMB READING CLIMBING CENTRE REVIEW

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: Kids, teens and even grown ups who want a fun or introductory space to have a go at climbing.

Not for: It goes without saying, if you’ve got a fear of heights, then this is not for you. If you’re regular climbers, the walls might not be challenging enough.

The damage? £14.95 per person for 90 minutes. Mini Mountaineers (age 2-4), £10.95. Kids Party packages from £22pp.
