Sofas so good
Like a Dior LBD, there are many imitations but you cannot compete with the classics. Think you know your furniture icons? Prepare to enter the sofa hall of fame.
Got that countdown to Christmas glazed look in your eyes? Food to order, gifts to buy, house to decorate, but also… where the hell are you going to seat the endless stream of friends and family popping in for a glass of mulled wine? Nothing like the spectre of guests to give you a kick up the arse to replace your knackered sofa and chairs.
Yes, you’ve endured that spring digging into your laft butt cheek all year, but you know, all I want this Christmas is a sumptuous seat where I can snooze in front of a fire having drunk my bodyweight in red wine. So I popped along to Camp Hopson’s Home and Furniture Store to check out their schuzy showroom – they’ve got 25% off everything at the mo’ and I’m a sucker for a bargain.
Camp Hopson love a quality brand, with a passion for craftsmanship… and I discovered some belters. This way laydee, there’s a perfectly plump cushion with your name on it.
THE LOUNGE COMPANY
To be honest, The Lounge Company is a new one on me, but when you discover they’re part of the iconic Parker Knoll and G Plan furniture family, you’ll be sitting up like a meerkat. It’s a given that all they sofas will give you all the heart eyes, they’re a mix of modern classics, where style and a soft landing are given top priority. The good news for your tired tush is that they all go through The Sit Test, so you won’t fee like Goldilocks trying to find a spot that’s just right. Comfort is key.
Better still, it’ll stand up to your mini house wreckers. The Lounge Company have unique family-friendly fabrics that will banish household stains with just water. I know don’t know kind of sorcery these guys are selling, but I’m buying. Yes that velvet sofa will be mine and greasy finger marks and red wine spills will not be its demise.
I’m a bit of an ercol ebay stalker. That sleek mid-century design looks so damn good, but the originals spark furious bidding wars, that feel like a furniture feeding frenzy. From 1920 to today, its iconic designs haven’t aged a bit, it still looks effortlessly cool no matter how small or grand your space or how old or new the piece.
Italian born Lucian Ercolani’s ethos was to design for comfort, function and beauty. Now in the hands of Henry Tadros, the Great Grandson of ercol’s founder, he’s leading the charge to ensure Lucien’s principles live on in their future designs. All made in its new Buckinghamshire factory.
The sofas are clean, contemporary and comfortable with the ercol attention to detail that we have come to expect, built to last and guaranteed to spark a ‘who gets the ercol?’ chat… it’s the Dior of furniture.
My family, owned loads of G Plan furniture back in the 70s we’re all kicking ourselves that we didn’t keep hold of it. Since 1953, G Plan has been a benchmark for classic British design – every sofa and chair built for real life. Nothing for show here, it’s been crafted to endure kids, animals, out of control house guests and sofa surfing teens.
The furniture maker dates back to 1898, when Ebenezer Gomme set up his workshop. In 1953, his grandson Donald launched G Plan – and with it, a post-war furniture revolution, selling sofas without matching chairs. *gasp*I mean stop it! No matchy-matchy three-piece suite. You have families reaching for the smelling salts.
The sofas and chairs are all made to order just down the road in the Wiltshire factory, crafting comfy, hardwearing furniture that looks beautiful. Although some of the designs are not my taste, the finish is undeniable and the G Plan Vintage collection launched in 2012, has all the Mad Men vibes. Pass me a martini, I’m done.
Duresta? Not one I’d heard of, but they sure know how to make show-stopping sofas. It oozes luxury and would look gorgeous in the LA mansion I’m refitting (in my head) for me and Ryan Gosling to live happily ever after. Back in real life, Duresta is part of the Parker Knolls-G Plan group and has handmade each piece of furniture in Nottinghamshire since 1938.
The sofas have hardwood frames that are hand-assembled by experienced craftspeople – and comes with 25-year guarantee. A sofa can see a lot of action in that time. But Duresta are so confident of their products, they’re prepared to stick their neck on the line for a quarter of a century. Fabrics are exclusive, sourced from the most prestigious and innovative mills and the finishing details are mind boggling – spot on pattern-matching, precision sewing and you get to choose how firm or soft your lounging needs to be. The ultimate supporting role. Ryan will be pleased.
Need it by Christmas? Camp Hopson Home are currently offering 25% off everything in store and if you order by Sunday 17 November they’ll guarantee delivery before family descend.
