The brilliant new Saltee sunscreen is among our top picks to refresh your summer beauty routine. Summer, we're gunning for you.
It’s that time of year when our usual beauty products can suddenly seem a bit heavy and full on. You don’t feel the need to slather yourself in a heavy cold cream every night while a full coverage foundation seems a bit Pete Burns (RIP) in bright sunlight. Plus if you’re not already slathering on decent sun protection every day (naughty), now’s the time to start. All of which means your beauty shelf/drawer/bag probably needs a bit of a late Spring clean. No time like the present, eh?
Personally, I don’t entirely trust the SPF claims of moisturiser or foundations so I’m forever on the hunt for a good standalone suncare product for my face. I hate the ‘white emulsion’ vibe of most lotions – they make you look deathly pale (oh, the irony), shinier than an oil slick and are so sticky they’re impossible to layer make-up over the top. And then there’s the problem of pore-clogging – hello spots. I’ve never been able to understand why suncare formulations lag so far behind skincare so I’m delighted to report that I’ve found a keeper. I’ve been trialling brand new Saltee Daily Protection Formula (£29) for the last week and am rather impressed. It’s Factor 50 but glides on like a dream and sits beautifully on my skin – it’s more like a primer than sun lotion. What’s more, the packaging is modern and chic (always a bonus) and this new indie brand is based just down the road from Muddy HQ in Great Haseley, Oxon!
Et voilà, my other recommended summer beauty stash additions…
Gotta love a misting spray to perk you up on a hot day (or mid-flight). This one contains fragrant things like coconut water and figs and is part of the new My Clarins range – it’s aimed at teens and twentysomethings but you don’t have to show ID to buy it (luckily, ahem).
Beauty Pie Shimmerbar Highlighter (£7.66 with a subscription)
Beauty Pie is a clever concept. It’s basically the Netflix of beauty – you buy a monthly subscription (from just £5) and get access to high quality products at factory prices. This bronzey highlighter is perfect for adding a summery glow (plus it’s a dead ringer for a certain other big brand block highlighter that’s a LOT more expensive).
This sweet-smelling scrub will get manky, dried-out, winter lips looking luscious again. Plus buying anything from this Provençal brand makes me feel like I’m already on my summer holidays.
Have you discovered Topshop’s make-up line? It doesn’t get much press but the products are well formulated and a total bargain. You can’t beat a jaunty new nail shade to mark the start of summer, I reckon, and this high gloss blue shade is called Oxymoron (why though? Who names these things?) and remind me of sea views. It also comes in green, pinky lilac and bright yellow – go have a play.
