<p>Hankering after a taste of the Med? Easy Jetting to Europe on the a regular basis for your potatas bravas fix can put a serious dent in you bank balance. A more convenient alternative is <a href="https://plateno6.co.uk">Plate at No.6 in Windsor</a>. Located down a cute cobbled street, in the shadow of Windsor Castle, this under the radar restaurant is a welcome pause from the many many pub in the Berkshire royal town.</p>



<p>Sicilian head chef Giancarlo Balistreri came to the UK to work with the much acclaimed Gordon Ramsey. His menu is tapas – with a twist, with a strong focus on sustainability, seasonality and provenance. Giancarlo oversees the kitchen at No.6, indulging his passion for experimenting with an array of fresh and wonderful ingredients for the benefit of our taste buds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>It&#8217;s hip without being too try hard. Halfway down Market St (behind the Guildhall) you&#8217;ll find Plate at No.6 – painted an elegant black facade, gold signage and a few tables and chairs outside – ever hopeful for sunshine. Prime seats when it does. </p>



<p>Inside is a harmonious mix of Scandi simplicity and modern mediterranean. The beautiful, period windows are draped with indoor plants and every inch of space is utilised with banquette seating. The space is not large, but it feels relaxed, intimate and buzzy. </p>

<p>The tapas menu is inspired by the cuisines of Spain, Turkey, France, Morocco, Italy, Greece and Lebanon – all cooked in an open kitchen in the full glare of hungry diners.</p>



<p>As for the menu, lots of sharing plates to choose from pan-fried seabass with a citrus salad, lamb cutlet with chimichurri or charred chicken thigh served with hash yoghurt and fresh tomato salsa. </p>

<p>We kicked off our gastronomic grand tour with sweet scallops, served with a parsnip puree, chorizo with a drizzle of dill oil. Scallops were perfectly cooked, the chorizo delivered that hit fo spice and saltiness. Top notch. Tuna is not my favourite fish, but my husband wanted to sample the spicy tuna tartare. It was surprisingly not too fishy and combined with the crispy salad and focaccia wafer was very tasty. </p>

<p>Chef Giancarlo then recommended the salmon, striploin steak with charred hispi cabbage and celeriac steak and Champagne. The steak was the star of the show, beautifully cooked at the charred hispi cabbage, mascarpone and whiskey sauce brought a lush balance of flavour. The celeriac steak was the wild card choice and was more delicious than it sounded on paper. The cheese, hazlenuts and Champagne sauce brought this dish to life. </p>

<p>For pud, we chose the Chef&#8217;s Cannoli and chocolate and pistachio cake. Giancarlo promises the only thing you’ll find in the freezer is his (delicious) ice cream. You could tell everything was freshly made and there was lots of flavour, but both dishes tasted the same. Next time I&#8217;ll have to eat quicker to get a slice of chef&#8217;s sellout lemon tarte.</p>



<p>The wines and cocktails have been carefully selected by Sicilian sommelier and Italian wine expert Virgilio Gennaro to perfectly compliment the food. Pull up a chair and enjoy!</p>

<p>I really wanted to try the prawns, lamb with chimichurri and the cracked potato with parmigiana cheese, but there was no more room. It&#8217;s a good excuse to go back again.</p>

<p>Slap bang in the centre of Windsor, so you are spoilt for choice. Mooch around Windsor Castle – King Charles&#8217;s grand Berkshire crash pad, give your credit card a battering shopping in the The Royal Arcade or stroll down the Long Walk. If you love messing about on the river, head to the River Thames, hire a boat and see the sights from the water. </p>

<p>Absolutely. Well-behaved pooches are very welcome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>Outside tables, no problemo, as long as you can navigate the cobbles. Space inside is a bit tight, so it would depend on your needs. It&#8217;s definitely worth calling ahead.</p>

<p><strong>Good for:</strong> easy, breezy meals with dates and mates. It&#8217;s provides an intimate escape from the touristy buzz of Windsor town centre. The foodie curious wioll will love the clash of culinary cultures.</p>



<p><strong>Not for</strong>: fussy eaters may struggle. The menu is not endless and if you&#8217;re anti flavour, texture and culinary creativity, you&#8217;ll have limited option.</p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong> pretty good for this neck of the woods. Appetizers from £7-£12.50, mains £12.50-£23 and puds are £8.50. Order little but often and you won&#8217;t get sticker shock when the bill comes at the end.</p>
