How to do Henley Regatta in style
The annual rowing fandango is fast approaching - 3-7 July to be precise. And this year there's a super-flash new VIP experience that's got Muddy's name written all over it. Shall we?
If you’re heading down to Henley Regatta this July and want to escape the riff raff (not that Henley does real riff raff, of course) then this one’s for you.
New this year and – let me be frank here – sounding utterly fabulous, The Hidden Garden is a luxe but laid-back riverside venue on the Berkshire bank, offering brilliant views of the course from a custom-built terrace, VIP hospitality, musical entertainment, gourmet food and – most importantly – lashings of booze (chilled Henriot champagne and local favourite, Mr Hobbs gin to be precise). Think backstage at Glastonbury but more fragrant. And with better toilets.
Open from 11am to 11pm each day (you can come and go as you please), there are roaming bands from 2pm each day and DJs spinning tunes from 4pm, all within a gorgeously landscaped private area. As someone who has ‘done’ the Regatta several times in a variety of slightly naff grass-trodden tents, posh (and yet not posh) enclosures and weird outdoor seating, this sounds like manna from heaven.
There are various different tickets on offer to suit all budgets, from a £50 day pass to more bespoke packages for larger groups of 10 to 70 (minimum spend £10k) in the adaptable private area, up to VVVIP packages for you and 40o of your closest friends where you become Guardians of the Garden and hire out the whole shebang on Sunday only (there’s a £60k minimum spend so best shake out your piggy bank first).
All tickets must be pre-booked – there’s no rocking up on the day thinking, ‘oh yeah, I quite fancy that’ – so grab your other half, bezzies, workies or a big group of your closest lycra-loving reprobates, and get organised pronto! I’ll try not to drink all the champagne before you arrive.
