The Pheasant, Hungerford
Muddy says: In the middle of National Hunt country, this stylish inn nr Lambourn is an odds on favourite for quality food and boutique bedrooms.
I’ve enjoyed a fab night out at The Pheasant Shefford Woodlands near Lambourn, and it’s high on my list of best local pubs in the area. It’s a handsome wood clad 17th century inn in the heart of National Hunt racing country, just off the A338 and close to J14 of the M4. When you step inside it has the kind of feeling that relaxes the shoulders – stone floors, open fires, wood panelling, leather banquettes and that buzzy hum that comes with regular locals at the bar.
The food is high quality gastropub fare – good enough for a romantic meal, but also relaxed for Sunday lunches too. For kids there’s garden out the back (avoid the road at the front clearly!) and there are also 11 elegantly refurbished bedrooms that I’ve had a good look around too.
The Pheasant is a stone’s throw from Lambourn, 4 miles from the pretty town of Hungerford and 10 miles from Newbury and, in my opinion, worth the journey every time.
