Jowl-busting facial

Get your glow back with a treatment that's perfect for you and your face.

How’s your skin holding up? Mine definitely needs industrial help. It’s feels like sand paper after months of freezing temperatures, the central heating on full blast coupled with my rather lazy beauty routine. Basic is an understatement. Yes I need to drink more water, moisturise twice a day and get more sleep (tell me something I don’t know *yawn*). But a facial that has a ton of science behind it might just perk my skin up – and knock a couple of years off in the process.

So say hello and thanks to Mel Wallace of Neverland Skincare, a facialist with an attention to detail I find really refreshing. Not to mention an honest approach to the products that will really work and how to care for your skin as you get older. Apparently you lose 20% of collagen by the time we are 40 (*ahem* that might be more. Alright I’m 42. Who’s counting?).

Mel’s premises, Neverland Skincare, is a treatment room in her stunning home down a private lane on the outskirts of Wokingham. Inside it’s as elegant and serene as any high street salon and the remote location is a bonus when you leave make-up free. Neverland Skincare is the only place in the Wokingham area specialising in 100% non-invasive, but results driven facials. For Mel it is all about the face. Each treatment is bespoke and tailored to your individual needs. Basically, it’s beauty-aethestics mash up with an emphasis on pampering.

Here comes the science bit: Mel works with a Vitamin A based skincare range called Environ. It’s been developed by one of the world’s leading plastic surgeons who pioneered the use of vitamin A in skincare in the ’90s. Basically it’s an anti-ageing treatment (fights UV damage from sun exposure) – and judging but the lines appearing on my face I can do with all the help I can get. There’s a ton of science behind Mel’s treatment and she knows her stuff, using the latest methods to achieve the best results – offering Environ facials, skin tightening (yes please), superficial peels for evening skin tone, collagen stimulation (otherwise known as micro needling) which is amazing on lines, wrinkles, pigmentation or other facial scars, LED light therapy and LVL lash enhancement. I’ll take the lot.

Personally, I do believe in the power of a good facial because a decent cleansing, seruming, moisturising and SPF routine clearly helps. If only I could be arsed to do it myself. So what can you expect? A calm and relaxing environment. Don’t be put off by the whizzy machinery, it’ going to transform you from wrinkled prune to youthful goddess (a slight exaggeration, but I’m hopeful). First, you have a thorough consultation to determine what your skin needs. Mel will put your face under surveillance and determine your skin type. Just as most women wear the wrong bra size, we also use the wrong creams for our skin type.

Once she knows, what she’s dealing with, Mel will be able to tailor a facial to your specific needs. I had the Environ HydraBoost Treatment. It targets dull and dehydrated skin to plump and hydrate (thank god, mine’s flakier than a Cornish pasty). Mel’s gets to work with her products and probes, working away at cleansing before applying a mask. The mask is painted onto my entire face (Mr Muddy said I looked like Mrs Doubtfire. It could’ve been worse, I thought I looked like Jason from Friday The 13th) leaving you to breath through your nose. While the mask is doing its funky thing – electronic pulses are helping to moisture deep deep down – my hands and arms are given the once over. Relaxing, peaceful, please don’t let it come to an end.

When the mask is removed, my skin felt smoother and plumper. The products aren’t overly smelly and you walk out glowing not greasy. Will I be back? Hell yeah. I’m not expecting to look 20 years younger. but I’ll settle for 10.
