5 unmissable Oscars moments

27 Feb 2017

As you might just have noticed, last night was the 89th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The movie industry’s finest got glammed up, came, saw and conquered… or, at least, thought they’d conquered but then realized someone had a made a humdinger of a boo-boo (more of which shortly). No time to read up extensively on the finer detail of the biggest, glitziest night on the showbiz calendar? Ta-da – here’s Muddy’s two-minute Oscars digest…

Someone had a very bad day at the office.

Whoop! We’re in the UK Blog Award Finals

24 Feb 2017

It’s been such a crazy year so far that I somehow forgot to tell you some really amazing news from *cough* last month. Oops!

So it’s a massive and heartfelt thank you for those of you who suggested Muddy Stilettos as the UK’s Best Arts & Culture Blog before Christmas, because guess what? We’ve only gone and made the Finals, one of only eight companies in the whole of the UK.

On my soap box… about body bashing

4 Feb 2017

Wait one second while I hoist up my big pants – but why is it necessary to trash talk ourselves and other women? Whether we are debating the rights and wrongs of Beyoncé’s Insta pregnancy announcement (despite the 10million likes), slagging off a celebrity for losing weight or looking at our reflection lamenting the mum tum that hangs before us – it’s time to stop.

It’s all too easy to blame Don Draper and his cohort of ad men for our negative outlook.

Downton the movie is on! But when?

16 Jan 2017

I say it loud, I say it proud. I LOVE costume dramas! Pass me my knitting and slippers, it’s my not-so guilty pleasure. A void was left when the final credits rolled on 25 Dec 2015, and Carson turned out the lights for the last time at Downton. Mr Selfridge briefly filed the void, War & Peace and Victoria certainly hit the spot and The Crown (OK not a bodice ripper, but retro) is so good I watched it twice.

Read this: a quick life lesson in letting go

26 Aug 2016

No, you haven’t clicked on the Oprah website by mistake. It’s just that I spotted this in the New York Times earlier this week and immediately told my sister, my mum and my cleaner about it, so definitely felt it was a Muddy must-share!

It’s an excerpt from a book called Zen Shorts by Jon Muth, about a wise panda called Stillwater who befriends three children and tells them some beautiful ancient stories (‘with a slight panda accent’) in order to teach them some valuable life lessons.

Watch this: The best Olympics ad *EVER*

19 Jul 2016

She’s on fire this morning! Thanks Muddy Bucks & Oxon for sharing this little gem of a promo… With Wimbledon and Euros out the way and bad news all the way on TV at the mo, I’m starting to itch for the feelgood of the Olympics, all those tales of sacrifice, the sobs on the podium, that wonderful feeling of being British and proud of it, that feeling from London if we can replicate it  of ‘oh-my-god-we’re-actually-winning!’

There will no doubt be gazillions of Olympics ads coming through in the next few weeks but you will absolutely, definitely, categorically want to see this one, made to advertise the UK Paralympians but massively uplifting and challenging to anyone whose perceptions of disabled people in general are stuck in the Seventies.

Antiques Roadshow is coming to Caversham Park!

21 Jun 2016

Quick! Get up your loft and start rummaging – BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow is coming to Caversham Park this Sunday 26 June! Yes indeedy, foxy Fiona Bruce and the team will be filming the next episode in the 39th (wowzers) series of the show at BBC Radio Berkshire’s HQ, Caversham Park. Apparently, the show was last in Berkshire about 8 years ago when they filmed in Ascot, so we’re well and truly due a revisit.

May Contain Food, South Hill Park, Bracknell,  8 & 9 June

This sounds absolutely bonkers and I already know I’m going to LOVE it. Award-winning dance company Luca Silvestrini’s Protein, is coming to South Hill Park on 8 & 9 June to conclude its UK tour of May Contain Food. A witty piece of dance and music theatre exploring the sensory, cultural and social implications of food – from the simple pleasures of savouring a cherry tomato to the moral dilemma of vegetarianism.

Wanna own Instagram?

18 May 2016

Photographer Mary Smith is a fan of natural light and natural shots, and her photos are stunning. So when I got the chance to grab a coffee with her recently, I asked her to share some top tips to elevate me from random snapper to Insta-Goddess. Could this actually be the summer I get some good shots, rather than hacking people’s heads off? Smartphones at the ready, take aim… SHOOT!
