Fab new salon alert!

2 Dec 2016

There are so many reasons to love Windsor, but if the castle, the shopping, the theatre, the river and the natural beauty of the area aren’t enough, here’s another one. S J Forbes opened just this summer on Peascod Street in this lovely building, and it’s been getting great reviews. I have heard from several moles who are fans of the original salon in Egham, Surrey, that it’s very good, so no surprise that I’ve been down to check it out.

I admire anyone who opens a hair salon these days because the competition is just crazy intense, and no more so than in Windsor. If you’re a Kérastase fan like me you’ll probably be half-committed to S J Forbes before you even make it through the door, and it’s a very attractive space inside too – not too big and with lots of slick black and white styling.

Run by husband and wife team Hayley and Sean Gibson-Forbes they opened the first S J Forbes salon in Egham, Surrey in July 2015 and the Windsor branch swiftly followed. Hayley has worked in hairdressing for yonks and has reached the finals of THREE British Hair Business Awards (just give her the golden gong would you?!). Sean is based at the Egham salon and Hayley splits her time between the two (but surely with the shopping in Windsor, this one has got to be her favourite?!).

There’s a real family feel to the salons (obviously!), Hayley has a lovely team of people working for her and clients that I saw on the day I was there got a very warm and genuine welcome either on the phone or when they walked through the door.

The mission to cover my greys is becoming quite the challenge for colourists across the county, and I’m quite fussy about the colour, but Hayley was brilliant. She has her views on the more ‘organic’ brands that are all the rage now, basically saying that colour is a chemical no matter how ‘natural’ brands try to appear so there is inevitably going to be slight damage to the hair. I found her honesty refreshing, and it was such a relief to find a hairdresser who wasn’t afraid to give a really thorough critique of my hair (is it me, or am I finding hairdressers all a bit politically correct lately?) it was great that Hayley gave it to be straight about what would and wouldn’t work for me.

So rather than my solid colour that I usually go for, Hayley suggested a few shades of gold-ish highlights just though the front section to frame my face, give my hair a bit more movement, oh and by the way lighter colours around your face are more youthful… BINGO! Where do I sign?! Get those foils on me now lady!

Prices are very reasonable I think, particularly for a town centre salon – a cut and finish starts at just £39 and the most expensive barnet chop from the creative consultant is £75 (I mean, that’s a bargain, people). Half head highlights are £58-£90 and full highlights £79-£110. Definitely one to put on your try list if you’re looking for a new salon or are close to Windsor.

And this is the finished result… TA DAHHHH! It’s the (now famous) Muddy Berks Back of the Head Shot that you all know and love! Actually, more side on this time, but ain’t it a faberoo little cut and colour? I am ready for the Christmas party season, and you could be too, just get yourself down to S J Forbes.
